Rear wheels no longer have power to them?

Hi all,

I have a JD 4510, and yesterday afternoon the rear wheels suddenly had no power to them-- front wheels still pulling mfwd front end.

I did not hear a mechanical failure, and there are no sounds of grinding etc so not sure that is going on. Gears all work, so it is not the gear box/planetary, any ideas?

And I take it that the tractor doesn't move if taken out of "mfwd" ?

No movement forward or reverse, and no noise?

Correct, when taken out of 4WD it does not move-- it will roll down a hill but it will not go anywhere under it's own power. No grinding noise etc, and I never heard a snap like something broke. I checked the Hydraulic fluid and that was fine-- unit is a power reversing unit, not a hydrostatic.

Try engaging diff lock in 2WD to see if it will move. If it will move with DL engaged you've probably lost a pinion gear shaft in differential.

Going to try to find the problem and fix it yourself? Do you have the tech manual?

Does the PTO function ?

Finding it might be needing to get the rear tires off the ground and removing some covers and trace out what is moving and what is not. Then decipher how to go about a repair if you find the problem.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I'm trying to diagnose a JD 4510 with the same symptoms. I PMd Eric, but no response. Anyone else have any ideas? Fluid and filters have been changed, all other hydraulics are working as well as MFWD, just no rear drive. Diff lock has no effect. Thanks!

Are the rear tires filled with liquid ballast? If so have you checked tire pressure? Sometimes the rim can spin inside the tire when there isn't enough pressure in the tires to force the bead against the rim.

With the beet juice fills it is quite slippery and can easily cause that issue of the rims spinning in the tires.
To verify you can use paint marker and mark the tire and wheel and try to move it in 2wd then stop and compare your marks.

I actually had a tractor with Rimguard in the back tires and the rims were spinning inside the tires but it only happened going uphill.

A good thought, but no, the rims aren't spinning. There's a slight drop in RPM and some trans rotation noise when you release the clutch in-gear, but no movement. I'm wondering if there's something in the power reverser mechanism that's not being shuttled/activated....
