Rear wheels no longer have power to them?

If neither rear tire is slipping in a rim and it will move forward and reverse in 4wd but not in 2wd, and behaves the same regardless of gear and range selected it's after the gear boxs so that brings it down to the differential.

As you can see, much discussion on the subject, but in the end, no resolution. Sometimes (often much later on) the individual will come back and explain a bit about what the problem was. The ten minutes spent doing that can help others down the road.

I'm wondering if maybe the coupling between the front & rear shafts slipped forward enough to drop the rear shaft, or lock ring (2) broke, letting the rear shaft slip out.

Another clue, no rotation with the rear wheels off the ground.

Not sure which is easier for you to access an internal look at on that tractor, but from the symptoms described, your rear drive shaft is disconnected. Either at one of the internal couplings in the tranny or in the differential. You'll need to open her up & take a look. the Weingartz web link above will give you decent schematics of the internals so you know where to look. A borescope may help you avoid unnecessary work if you can thread it in to see what you need.

Thanks for the replies, I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up being something like a $2 circlip! I'll be sure to update this post.

And the final answer is... sheered ring/pinion bolts! The hope is that they were never properly torqued by JD, the fear is this will happen again.

If all the threads are good, maybe some blue loctite will help keep it from happening again & still let you take it apart later if you need to.

It's mostly back together now, blue Loctite was indeed used on the new bolts. I just noticed in the parts catalog that the original 8.8 screws have been superseded by M8-1.25 X 20 10.9 Metric C.S. I'd also expect the torque spec increased, but have no idea where to find that... Looks like JD knows about this problem.
