The downside is that those of us who are "bandwidth challenged" don't want to wait for the pictures to load every time we check out a post.
If I'm lucky I can connect at 28,800 bps on my dial-up connection. I prefer to have them as links, and I can choose whether to spend the time to look at them, and then skip over them if I return to the post later.
