I have located a Rears Pak-Flail that I am thinking about buying. It cuts 7'" , is a real heavy duty mower and appears to be in average condition. What bothers me is the plate with the serial number is missing. The seller says he thinks it just fell off. Another thing that bothers me is some of the cutters appear to need replacing. I have always been told to change all cutters and not just a few because it might make it out of balance and end up screwing up the bearings. Since I don't know that much about flail mowers I wanted to put it out there and get some opinion. The serial number issue bothers me the most, it could very well be stolen. The elderly gentleman that owns it says he bought it new about 12 years ago and might have some paperwork. He told me where he bought it so I called them. They have no record of selling it to him.

Sounds plausible that the tag fell off....... if it were me I wouldn't think that much of it. If you are really bothered by it, I'd walk and look for another flail.

Same with me, it would not be an issue.

The grass slicer knives have to be replaced in pairs -the opposite knife from the one that is damaged must be removed if you want to continue mowing and have no spares to maintain the rotors balance so no worries there.

The flailmower knives, bearings, belts, pulleys, etc., are available so thats not an issue.

It is entirely possible that the rivets holding the ID plate rusted off so thats not much of an issue. You will be able to see the rust where the plate rivets were-if there is surface rust no worries.

It is also probable that the person at the dealership blew you off and or they kept no sales records- he may simply have been mistaken about who the dealer is which is not much of an issue as you could always call another Rears dealer and ask if this man purchased a flail mower from them.

As heavy as a Rears is I would not worry to much about it being stolen goods and if it was stolen I doubt seriously he would sell it if he was the thief.

He may just find the paperwork and you will have a great flailmower.:thumbsup:

The old gentleman did find the paper work with the serial number. The area where the serial number was is badly rusted so it probably rusted off. You can see the holes from the rivets that held it on. I told him I would take it and so he delivered it today. That sure is a heavy unit.

Thanks Leonz, I will keep that in mind. Regarding the changing of worn blades, do you have to change all of them and not just a few worn ones?

About the blades;

If the blades are very worn it does not hurt to change them all so they are balanced and this also gives you the opportunity to check the hangers and change any or all suspect knive hangers.

If you have broken knives they have to come off and either the opposite knive have to come off before you finish mowing or the new knives installed.

You will need new V belts as a matter of course as the rubber always rots and the new Kevlar or Gates high shockload green belts are top notch belts.
The gear box oil should be changed prior to the initial use or during the repair phase-over winter etc., but- you may want to kick the brush back if it is not snow covered to give you a head start and destroy any weeds and vermin nests.

The beauty of the winter mowing of brush is its died back and easy to cut and near zero risk of brush fires.

Be sure to only grease the rotor bearings with 6-7 pumps each time you mow as you do not want to blow the seals.

I have a rears 6 footer. I love it.
As far as the blades, I'd put on a full set. They are not expensive and I'll tell you this, the flail you bought is a high end unit. it's worth a new set of blades I would think.
