Reason enough to change your own oil

hosspuller,

I agree with you 100%. When businesses condone or encourage these practices it only hurts the honest techs and businesses. Many years ago I was offered a job with a national tire chain. The manager told me when business slowed down in the winter the lesser productive techs were fired. So, the honest tech has to compete with the dishonest tech who sells customers unneeded parts and extra services or cheat on work performed. Needles to say, I did not go to work for them. Unfortunately, these practices are involved in more than auto repair. I know someone that worked as a checkout clerk at a clothing retail store. The bottom credit card sellers kept their hours getting cut and cut until they would just quit.

Not always but often these franchise owners own several different brands of franchises. They install cameras in the service bays, sit at home or yacht in comfort and bark out orders to all of their managers and watch the numbers as they come in. This is sort of like playing the stock market with no personal emotions attached to the workers and customers with the bottom line being the only concern. The manager in the video was probably that type of franchise owner.

Automobile dealerships are doing the same thing... just had this happen to me. They charged for fuel filters that they did NOT change.

Dishonesty is RAMPANT in the auto and home repair businesses.

Years ago, I was visiting a good friend of mine who ran a one-man repair shop at his home and was widely regarded as an honest man. One of his long time customers brought an invoice to him because it "just doesn't look right". The customer had taken his car to the selling STEALership for a 60,000 mile major tune up as prescribed by the maintenance manual, which he followed religiously.

The invoice stated, in part the following:

1) 60k major $8XX.xx

2) Replace tail lamp $X.xx

3) Adjust cam clearance $XXX.xx

4) Inspect tappet gap and adjust $XX.xx

Now, if you know anything about Volvo 2.3L 4 cylinder engines, you KNOW that a valve adjustment past the complimentary initial inspection/adjustment at 1,500 miles is almost unheard of and I mean *maybe* 1 im 1,000 will ever need it. Also, the "60k major" includes things like checking the valve adjustment, replacing the timing belt, plugs, wires, cap and rotor. It is a VERY comprehensive service.

The customer was CHARGED to check/inspect the valve adjustment THREE TIMES on the same invoice!!!!! He thought the labor total was excessive, when we looked at the invoice we saw that not only was he charged to inspect the valve adjustment three times, but to actually adjust it TWICE. Now, there were parts (shims) on only one of the three inspect/adjust operations and you physically cannot perform the "adjustment" w/o using shims (parts) therefore we KNOW two of the inpsect/adjust labor ops were FRAUDULANT.

My advice, if you find a shop/mechanic you can trust, KEEP HIM BUSY!

doesnt surprise me at all...
I paid over $600.00 for and oil change, fuel filters, and urea fill up... from a FORD Dealership. Come to find out, they charged me for both filters being changed, yet changed neither of them.

A friend owed a limo company and use to do the routine service work himself. He would buy dented 55 gallon drums of oil from a distributor and it worked out to be a few cents cheaper per quart than buying the quarts and gallon jugs at Autozone when on sale.

When you can buy a filter and 5 quarts of oil for $15 and Jiffy Lube can change your oil for $20 yet they have to pay for labor and all the overhead of having a shop makes you wonder just what they are putting in or on your car.

I went to a quick change place ONCE when I was building my house and figured I didn't have time to change the oil in my truck...$35.00 later, the oil was dirtier than what was in it when I went...NEVER again....With a store deal I put Mobile One and a Mobile One filter in the new truck for the same money. 1/2 hour, or less, is worth the peace of mind.

Interesting. I have to say that back when I was a kid (in the 60's), I worked at a fast food franchise while going to high school and the stuff we did to customers meals...

well, lets just say if the burger fell on the floor, it didn't go in the garbage can or maybe it did and came back out again......

Picking your nose and breading fish fillets.....

Bugs on the wall in the soup......

People raved about the food too.

I never ate there. Nothing, nada.

They are still in business at the same location after all these years and I bet, nothing has changed, except the faces.

Some posters on here have probably ate there, and thought the food was good......
