Yanmar 135
Looking to get some thoughts on this situation if you don't mind.. been racking my brain over it a bit.

I have a yanmar135 in pieces and I have the old motor with some parts missing, and also another 13hp yanmar diesel from a reefer that could be used, both have their challenges, looking to get some opinions on which direction to go.

Old motor: head and block look good, cylinder sleeves are clean, pistons might need replacing, rings definitely need replacing, missing odds and ends like the oil pump (around $200), oil pickup tube, injectors, lots of bolts missing. Also unknown if all of the parts like hydraulic pump, injection pump are in full working order.

Replacement motor: In working order, fully assembled. Challenges to get this to work include making a bracket/mounts to get it to hook up where the original motor went, it's not as wide. Also I would have to find a way to mount the alternator and wire that into the system. There's no place for the hydraulic pump since it's cam driven on the old engine and there's no way to really integrate that into this one. So I would need a clutch pump/belt driven pump to overcome that.

I guess it comes down to some unknowns, plus rebuild parts with the old motor vs. working in the replacement motor, having to figure out how to get belt driven hydraulics, and a more complex charging system. I believe there is also a fuel solenoid to wire with the replacement engine and it also has a water pump on the belt system as well..hmm.

I would stick with the original if possible. I have had to "make" things work in the past, and they work well until they don't...and then all those modifications to make something fit where it shouldn't become a PITA. I think in the long run you will be much more satisfied with everything back to "stock". If done right, and taken care of, you'll probably never have to touch the motor again. Those little Yanmars are BEASTS!

Thanks for the reply, that's what I'm thinking as well, however I'm a bit worried about finding some parts as some of the odds and ends don't seem to be available online. I could disassemble the replacement engine and see if anything could be used from it.

I would also recommend at least starting out with the intent of using the original. A good bit of research on needed parts probably needs to be the first step. Several dealers vend used parts as well as new overhaul parts. Might possibly sell the other engine for a few dollars to offset some cost.

years ago, i bought an old mercedes 180D. engine came in a box. i found a mercedes reefer engine that had the same block. so, converted the industrial to automotive by swapping parts. ran the crap out of that old car:confused3:

Thanks for checking in Winston. Do you have any sources/links to those dealers that have new and used parts? I've only found new parts online and am making a list of what I'm missing so far.

In this case the block is different, and how the hydraulic pump is integrated into the timing cover and camshaft driven makes it trickier.

Quite frankly, I would sell everything for parts and buy a running tractor. You can probably get one of that size cheaper than you can make either engine usable.

I'm not so sure, this size in reasonable shape are going for 2-4k and I believe I could have this one running/working for around 1.5-2k and also I enjoy the process of refurbishing and getting it running again.

I think you need to stay with the original block so the tractor is structurally sound. And that reefer engine likely has little sale value so sacrificing it to scrounge parts, you won't be out much. But this assumes its parts are compatible. Verify before removing anything.

I think you would be better off buying another complete engine that fits the YM135 and starting from there. I definitely wouldn't try to shoehorn in the reefer engine to create a Frankensteinmar ....

Hoye sells used parts and parts tractors motors. Call them up or send an email and see what they have. You may be able to fit a slightly larger engine off a different tractor as well.

Call or email Hoye Tractor Company in Texas.

Google used yanmar parts and you can pick up numerous dealers. user bmaverick posted a list at one time but I can't find it. Maybe he will come along and post it again.

I received the parts from the original block that were missing so a rebuild is looking very viable.

Welcome! My vote would be to keep it original IF possible. It will for sure make it easier to sell down the road if you decide to & you should recoup most if not all of your investment. Keep us posted!

I think I have everything except for one push rod, which isn't the end of the world. Time to start taking measurements to see what I'll need for this rebuild. I'm thinking I'll make a build thread for it.

I like that idea.

yes, build thread please. we all learn a lot from that and can help brainstorm if you find something you have a question about

Voting for the build thread as well, cannot beat visual learning (some of us need all the help we can get :) )

I'm sure it will be an adventure for us all. The motor was not disassembled by me so the orientations are unknown but I should be able to figure it out. I have this other 2cyl yanmar here if needed it can be disassembled for some hints, and who knows maybe it has the 165mm pushrod I need in it.
