I have a friend who has a 1989 Ford 1920 with 1017 hours on it. He was recently looking at his owners manual and noticed that it says the injector pump ought to be rebuilt after 600 hours. His tractor runs fine, although it does seems to smoke a tad more than it did when he bought it. Has anyone bothered to rebuild their pump after 600 hours? Is it a big job? More than a moderately handy do it yourselfer can do? Thanks in advance for your time and information.

I don't know for sure, but my guess is that it's a typo. I'd say it is more likely to be 6000 hours between rebuilds. If I didn't have problems, I wouldn't touch it.

I wouldn't go to the trouble to rebuild the pump unless something were wrong. I would however take the time to unscrew the injectors and clean things up. A basic test for the pump would be to turn the engine and see if the quantity of fuel is the same from all the lines. My lame pump had a big difference in this test and chips were found in the injectors. SteveV

I'm like Jinman, 600 hours is nothing on a diesel. If it is running fine, leave it alone. Every once in a while you should add a fuel additive such as Power Service to clean your injector nozzles and disperse water in the fuel. After a fuel injection pump is rebuilt it has to be run on a fuel stand to calibrate the fuel settings correctly. When reinstalling on the tractor it has to be "timed". Not a job for a do it yourselfer. On a 4cyl diesel it would probably cost around $450.00 for the rebuild plus the labor for r&r..

Are you sure, your friend doesn't have an old GM V8 diesel... then it would be true... /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif {I owned one /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif}

I agree... 600 hours is spit... and I question why that would even be in an "operator's manual"...?
