Rebuilding the cylinder on my hoe stick

Eddie, thanks for the post. Good information to have on hand just in case. Very good pictures.
What type of repairs did you have to do to get your dozer up and running, after having problems with the hydraulic system?

Yikes Eddie, you've got some big stuff there! Good to see as I may have to do similar to my swing cylinders soon. Of course, I'll be able to pick mine up with one hand so it may be just a tad easier than yours. Are there special tools/bullets/cones to get the new seals on?

Thanks for the pics /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I went to the dealer to find out what sized socket they use on the piston. The mechanic there showed me a 2 inch impact that they put on a lathe to get the outside diameter small enough to fit.

$29 for a Proto socket, and then grinding off the outside of it really makes me question my sanity, but there's really no other way.

The new piston is on the right. The old piston is in the middle, and the part on the left is something I haven't seen before.

There was one metal ring on the outside that I repalace from the kit.

Here's the rebuild kit. Lots of gaskets, some of which you don't even use. I think it's a standard kit for different cylinders since both Case and New Holland do this with every kit I've bought.

Here's a good view of the problem. Not sure how this happens when it was working fine, then all of a sudden they get all mushed up and start leaking.

Here's the piston and rod assembly back together.

On the case rebuild kits, they include instructions showing which way the gaskets go. New Holland doesn't include this and I had to check my manuals to make sure on one of the gaskets.

I really should have had the New Holland parts guy print me a copy of the cylinder when I bought the kit, but seem to forget this every time I do a cylinder on this tractor.

The hardest part is getting the cap off the cylinder. If it's on with loctite, then you have to use a torch to melt the loctite. I got lucky on this one and it came apart fairly easy.

The second hardst thing to do is get the piston back in the cylinder. It can be very hard to extremly hard. Either way, it's a royal pain.

Eddie, Thanks for the pictures, I've worked in and around hydraulic equipment for years and I've never had a cylinder apart. You make it look easy and all these years I've always dropped them off at hydraulic supply in San Antonio and went back and picked them up rebuilt in a day or so with a nice fat bill to go with it. Next time a cylinder blows out I'll have to get a kit and give it a try, worst case I'll have to take the cylinder and parts over to the hyd place and give them the hangdog look that I'm accustomed to wearing when a machine kicks my b@&&.

Here's another view of the tool used to loosen and tighten the cylinder caps. It opens and closes to fit different sized cylinders, and the pins are reversable for smaller or larger holes.
