What is the recommended warm up procedure?

Its not excessively cold here, barely ever freezes. With my new tractor (Kubota), I turn it on (key, glowplug, ignition) and then let it idle at low until I see the first bar on the temperature gauge.
With my old JD650, that didn't have a temp gauge, I would turn it on, let it idle. While it was idling, I would get myself ready (e.g. ears, eyes, gloves &overalls) and then come back for a walkaround inspection of the tractor. This usually included crawling under to see what has gotten stuck under there.

By this time, 3-5 minutes would have passed. However at the dealer and at rental or commercial yards , I see them jump on, turn the key, and drive off. Not sure if this should be trusted however. The dealer probably does not want you to think that you need to put 1/10th of an hour on the clock, and the bigger yards a) don't care or b)already warm.

Thanks

P.S. ill probably keep doing it my way, but I would like the knowledge that I'm being overly conservative.

I do what you listed or less and we are cold as in below zero. It gets warm while traveling from the barn.

Part throttle while moving does it.

don't idle too low or you won't get any oil moving.

I think for warming up, rpms should be a little higher than idle. Maybe up around 1000 if it's warm out as you describe. Out here below freezing, I warm up at 14-1500 rpm. Depending on temps I'll let it run 5-15 minutes before hopping on the seat.

doesn't the owners manual cover that topic? (at least on mine it does) imho warming up to a few notches on gauge should be ok main thing is not to put it under working load till warm....hydraulics & engine agree w/above poster not to let it idle for long periods esp when new. & try to avoid short sessions on a new engine enjoy the break in!

In extreme cold weather, ( -15 to -20c )I let it run at about 1300 rpm's, for 10 to 15 min.
Then, take off slow to let them juices flow, after a few minutes of that, I open er up.

I warm mine up at 1500 RPM +/-100 RPM for 5 minutes or so...then no load (meaning no PTO operation) until it's up to normal operating temperature (about a quarter way up the scale).
The Deere manual isn't too specific (IIRC), but I'm pretty close to the manual recommendation.

"Warm UP " is not understood.
It means operate at reduced load once oil pressure has stabilized. Until coolant temps has reached near normal temps. Warmup does not mean idle the machine .
If the temps are near or below freezing. A block heater should be used for 1 to 12 hrs before starting. Even if the engine will start at -20F on glow plugs alone.

Knowing that diesels don't warm up at an idle I only recommend that you leave it at an idle till the engine is running correctly on all cylinders and exhaust is clear. Then bring it up to about 1200 or 1300 rpm for five to ten minutes depending on temperature, more if it cold like -0 temps. I also will activate the hydraulic system to allow the oils to start circulating through the tractor if possible.

Good point, buickanddeere. A block heater is a diesel's best friend and it drastically cuts down on waiting time getting up to operating temperature.
The computer on my 3520 will raise the low idle to 1250-1300 rpm if it's even chilly. I raise it to 1500-1600 after that.
