Well I've only been driving diesels since '79 . My procedure is similar to what you do with your JD EXCEPT NEVER CRAWL UNDER A RUNNING VEHICLE UNLESS IT'S CHOCKED. Also if "getting ready" is QUICK as in driving my VW Diesel Jetta I make a point of going at not much more than a fast idle for several minutes. So yes, I think your starting procedure is over conservative. With this thread in mind

What is the recommended warm up procedure?
Its not excessively cold here, barely ever freezes. With my new tractor (Kubota), I turn it on (key, glowplug, ignition) and then let it idle at low until I see the first bar on the temperature gauge.
With my old JD650, that didn't have a temp gauge, I would turn it on, let it idle. While it was idling, I would get myself ready (e.g. ears, eyes, gloves &overalls) and then come back for a walkaround inspection of the tractor. This usually included crawling under to see what has gotten stuck under there.
By this time, 3-5 minutes would have passed. However at the dealer and at rental or commercial yards , I see them jump on, turn the key, and drive off. Not sure if this should be trusted however. The dealer probably does not want you to think that you need to put 1/10th of an hour on the clock, and the bigger yards a) don't care or b)already warm.
Thanks
P.S. ill probably keep doing it my way, but I would like the knowledge that I'm being overly conservative.
It's practices like that which cause unemployment. The world relies on abuse and failure of equipment so we can go out and buy new stuff, thus keeping the factories running.
What are you going to do in 10,20,50 years when that tractor is still running like new, with thousands of hours on it? What will be your excuse for getting rid of it and BUYING NEW? People like you and I are a drag on the economy.
