I guess even if I had been thinking "caterpillars" I would have figured my odds of finding it were slim. As far as I'm concerned-- mystery solved. Thanks much for your input.

I did a search for "caterpillars". I'm kind of curious about critters and when I see something that I have never seen before I try look it up. I sure have never seen one of these.

Came across a snapshot I took of this strange looking little guy we came across outside our house last August. No idea what it is. (??)

EXACTLY what I said when my wife and I spotted this guy! :) It just looked other-wordly. I guess you saw the solution to the mystery that whistlepig posted. We have loads of these butterflies around here from time to time but have never noticed the in this stage of their development.

Wow-- I think that's it! If not the exact species, a closely related one. All of the pariculars would seem to match.

We were leaving the house when we spotted it and only got this pretty crappy picture. How did you come up with the ID??

Geeez, you didn't squish it did you ? I hope not or the world be short a beautiful butterfly...My Mother loved butterflies ......:)

I would have had to bring him in and watch him grow out

Same with me and birds. There ae only a few species "little brown bird", robins, iggles" (Pat McManus).

As it was pretty close to an area where we drive on the lawn, I took it over to the edge of the woods and set the critter down on grass in a more protected area. Had I harmed it in any way my dog would have never forgiven me! ;)
