I am looking for recommendations for a 16 to 18 foot disc with wings. It would be used to finish a field after plowing and can't be any wider than 18 feet. A friend wants one and I don't want him to rely solely upon my advise. He has a 100 hp tractor gross engine. I really don't know how large of one he can pull but I am sure he is okay with most up to 18 feet. Your help is appreciated.

I'm not familiar with anything that size. I have a 7-8 foot disc for my 68 Hp tractor and it's about all it will pull in the thick wet dirt (Alabama clay).

Not enough tractor for 16-18 ft. He needs to be looking in th 12-14 ft range.

I have seen him pull a neighbors 14 foot transport without wings. It is an old JD AW or RW. I am not real familar with Deere discs. He does well with the 14 and I was thinking he could certainly go up to a 16 foot with wings, but wasn't sure about an 18 foot. I had the same concerns as you.

Those old AW and BW dick were very very lightweight. We had a 14 ft like you mentioned. Pulled it with a 4020 JD. When you get a wing disk you are "usally" getting into a much heavier weight per blade categorey simply becauae the center mainframe has to be built strong enough to support added stress of the wings. Just my opinion but we pull disk all the way down here. He would certianly have to hold up on it to pull a wing disk.

I do however have a neighbor that pulls a 21ft 230 JD disk with a 2950 JD. This tractor is probally about the same engine hp as ur neighbors. He pulls it on very hard ground that cows have compacted. He has to hold up on it all the time but techincally he is "pulling" it. I have a disk just like his and consider it a load for my 1486 in certian conditions. So i guess what im saying is its just a matter of opinion. Good luck in yalls endeavor.

I have an 18 ft IH wing disc that I am pulling with a 125 hp tractor with no problems.

his tractor wont even start to pull a wing disc.we have a 12 to 14ft heavy plowing disc.an our 85hp 2wd drive will barely pull it when you lightly put it in the ground.the disc we have really needs a 130hp tractor to really put it in the ground.so your friend needs a 10 to 12ft disc for his tractor.

So much depends on your soil condition and actual disk that there is no single answer. We have a miserable clay soil that is generally tough pulling. We have so many disks around that I can't think of them all but suffice it to say our New Holland TS115A with 115 engine horsepower will pull a 20 foot wing disk, 20 inch blades, but can't handle a 14 foot disk, different brand, larger blades, in the same ground. It is really time to go to the coffee shop where the local farmers hang out and talk, or visit neighbors or local dealers. They know best what works in your conditions.

If he gets a bigger tractor I would suggest a Massey winged disk. They are heavy enough to plow with, and have 10" spacing so they pretty much are a plow. So then he could get rid of the plow and just use the disc for prime tillage, and finishing.

Here's a 12 footer, but at 853 lbs per blade I doubt that your neighbors tractor will be able to make good use of it. This seems to be a recurring theme every year. It is not just the width of a disk that needs to be considered, but type and weight per blade along with soil and terrain conditions is what will dictate what one can make use of with their tractor.
