I was just reading an ad where the seller was promoting his grey market tractor buy bashing reconditioned tractors. His statement was that reconditioned tractors are done so with sub-standard parts. My question is ( Where are these sub-standard parts coming from? ). I was under the assumption that the only parts that were available were original equipment parts. Sure would like to know where the outlet is for these so called (sub-standard parts). Any ideas? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thanks Rick

I think you will find that these "factory reconditioned" units are being refurbished in Vietnam. I am told that they have parts that fit but are , indeed, substandard. Others here with more info may tell you more. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I haven't heard of any substandard parts. Sure there has been a long running debate concerning Yanmar brand name filters vs Wix, Fram and such but I don't know of any other parts. The gripe I have heard concerning the Vietnamese reconditioning is that the tractors look really nice but the internals are not touch and they are worse than what you would expect.

Question

This question may sound dumb, but what is Grey Market Tractors.

I know there is many brands out there, and I always thought Grey Market was like Yanmar, Iseki, Century but I don't think that is right?

Would appreciate someone telliing me what it is.

If you took your car to Canada and sold it up there it would be considered a grey mkt auto.

I have heard several storys about them. One was that they part out several tractors and then replace most of the bolts and chrome plate some parts , repaint the exterior , then gather up what parts it takes to put one or two back together.
Substandard = used. Maybe just a suburban legend.

Sounds to me like everyone is alledging substandard workmanship instead of parts. Another dealer says he can take a class C tractor and turn it into a class A tractor for $400.00. He must be buying his parts at the cut-rate location also. I just bought the basic parts for a Mitsubishi and it was almost double that. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Thanks for the replies Rick

A "grey market" tractor is one that was not originally intended for sale in this country.

The version of the story I was told is domestic tractor companies did all they could to keep them out of the country but they kept finding their way through loop holes. So they really weren't "black market" tractors, just grey.

To put it succinctly (past that they were not intended for the U.S. market), gray market tractors are tractors sold new in a country other than the U.S. and then imported into the U.S. as used tractors. Except for Kubota tractors, this practice is not illegal, and therefore not considered black market. Thus, they are dubbed "gray market".

Primarily these tractors were built and sold new in Japan to Japanese farmers. At some point the farmers replace their tractors or no longer farm, and sell or trade in their tractors. There are many yards around Japan that collect these used tractors, and many Japanese companies that export the tractors to other countries. The U.S. is not the only destination - Canada and Australia/New Zealand seem to be popular destinations.

Popular Japanese gray market tractors in the U.S. are: Yanmar, Shibaura, Iseki, Mitsubishi, and Hinomoto. All of these manufacturers at one time manufactured tractors for the U.S. under other more familiar names such as John Deere, Ford, Bolens/White, Cub Cadet, Massey Ferguson. I believe most of them still do.

Grey narket is just like buying a second hand automobile with all the same pitfalls. Parts are often no lomger available and dodgey repairs may have been carried out. Buyer beware prevails. Like a second hand car beware of fresh paint and new tyres. Parts freshly assembled etc. A machine kept garaged will not require a repaint. I bought a B7001 for the cost of a ride on mower and I am very happy. I am confident it will out last and out perform the average ride on mower as well.
