I guess everyone can't locate a tractor that has only been used once month for life and kept in a garage. Even if they did the price would be beyond some people's budget. For the price of the reconditioned units being sold, you can't expect everything to be replaced on them. People who can afford buy (new), people who can't afford new and have mechanical ability buy (used) and people who can't afford new and have no mechanical ability often buys (reconditioned).

Just some thoughts Rick

I have more fear of a second hand tractor found in the US like yours then second hand tractors from Japan. American operators are far more abusive and run there tractors 10 times longer than the Japanese. I have customers trying to trade in there 5 year old Kubota’s all the time and they look and run like they fell from the pits of hell and they should they will have close to 4000 hours on them. As for parts most manufacturers stop building parts after 5 years. Parts are easier to get for a 25 year old grey Yanmar than a 10 year old US model Case.

" to get for a 25 year old grey Yanmar than a 10 year old US model "

Funny thing. I can walk into a tractor supply store, and buy lots of parts for my 51 year old 8N.. but am told that parts for a 69 ford 8000 are obsolete, and not available... what's up with that! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

We're getting into another subject now but due to the popularity of thr 8N, aftermarket parts are being introduced for them. As of a couple of years ago, Ford was going to discontinue making parts for the older Ford tractors.

I'm probably wrong here, but I thought there were regulations regarding OEM's having parts availablity for a minimum of 10 years after orphaning a model. I realize that these regs wouldn't apply to grey's. Can any one set me straight on this?

Trade Practices Act and selecting a good grey

In Australia that is covered by the trade practices act however most dealers are unaware of it - or don't want to know about such things. Dealers and manufacturers are suppost to provide support for the life ie 10 years, of the unit. Some things like white goods are only covered for 3 years.
Doesn't help much when they say they cannot supply unless you want to sue. Again what I said earlier - buyer beware. Do your homework and be prepared to look around. Expect to pay a premium for a unit in good condition- It will be cheaper in the long run. The B7001 I found had been kept garaged for the last 25 years in Japan and was in better condition than a late model left outside for the last 5 years. Water and condensation are the biggest problems and can displace oil from the steering box, transmission or motor. Left for a few weeks in this condition bearings deteriate quickly.

Your right that you have to maintain parts for 10 years but the manufacturer does not have to build parts for 10 years and they don’t. They can predict what it will take to get them through the ten year window. Plus dealers don’t have to maintain 100% of the parts only a minimal amount.

I have seen the tractors used in Japan and I have never seen one in a garage. Maybe under a overhang but they are always in the weather no matter what an importer might tell you.

Thanks for the conformation. I thought I had been told it was 10 years, but it was quite some time ago and I've begun questioning myself if it isn't in recent memory - at least when I remember to /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
