Greetings;

I have an L2550 GST with leaking rad. When the engine is running you can see fluid leaking out of the front of the rad. A new rad (quoted by a Toronto dealer) is $731 Cdn. Haven't taken it out of the tractor to take it in for a quote, but is recoring generally cheaper than replacing? Any pitfalls to recoring? Any insights greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Erik

Hi Erik,

This is an interesting question; commercial or industrial radiators have replaceable subcomponents (upper & lower tanks etc) and are by design, suited for re-coring while the typical 殿utomotive radiators (built with plastic tanks) are not.
I ran diesel engine & truck shops years ago and have used commercial radiator 途e-cores for years. I would certainly look at a cleaning, flow testing and resealing or a re-core job before condemning the complete radiator. Your cost should be 50% that of a new assembly hope this helps.

Not sure what is on the older ones but on my L3130 GST there was aluminum core and plastic upper and lower tanks and nobody wanted to touch it around here so had to get a new one.

Might try radiator leak stopper.... not a great solution....but it has worked for me in the past on two occasions.... depends on size of hole, etc...

Stop leak should be used per my factory John Deere manual.

If that does not make it "serviceable" then a shop can tell you your options.

I don't know the size of your Rad, but ti cost me $280 to recore my 8N about 2 years ago.

Greetings and salutaions,

I would strongly suggest that you verify the radiator is a japan radiator product and you can find a wholesaler to replace it with an oem radiator.

If that does not work L+M radiator should be able to help you with a replacement radiator with replaceable tubes and zero problems or a high quality standard replacement.

If that fails the radiator is a Japan radiator product from what I remember and should be easy to find a replacement exactly like it at less cost with a searching radiator sites in the web which is how I found an original replacement for my Isuzu engine on my fifteen year old 4 by 4 Isuzu truck

Here is thier home page. L&M Radiator, worldwide manufacturer and distributor of MESABI flexible core heat exchangers for all heavy-duty equipment. Manufacturing facilities in the United States, Mexico and Australia.

AND for the benefit of my fellow mechanics here is my Mesabi radiator story.

the above is part of the proposed route of my future G scale railroad near my castle

Onward to the legend created by fact and actual events, and many a belly laugh that would make the court jester desire to draw blood from the teller of the tale and make the village fool green with envy.

The story begins on the night shift after many months of mining salt with one of the "new to us" used Wagner ST-6A mining shovels from the white pine copper mine (now flooded).

So anyway we began disassembling the engine compartment of the mining shovel to access the engine compartment and expose the radiator which was leaking and needed repair.

The radiator was exposed and much to my happiness as mechanic, it was found to be a Mesabi type radiator with replaceable cores, sealing O rings, and quick surgery in the hospital with a quick return work.

I labored to explain to the shop foreman (who was recently promoted to the maintenance general foreman/department manager) no accounting for taste or ............... I explained that all that was required were what ever numerous core elements required, sealing o rings, and the special interanl snap ring pliers used to install and remove the cores and the radiator could be repaired in place. my co-workers and my supervisor had ever never seen a radiator like this and refused to believe it was possible to repair the radiator in place.

I labored to explain the removal was unecessary and it could be repaired in place to no issues. but my supervisor ordered the radiator removed and sent for repair. I was overuled and was told I did not know what I was talking about..........................

A few days later the radiator was returned from the repair shop with an eigth thousand dollar repair charge and Lo anf Behold the replaceable cores upper element and lower element were replaced with 0a standard core radiator................................

Needless to say "this fool who new nothing" could barely contain his laughter as the radiator shop owner was called and asked why he destroyed a 10,000 dollar radiator; his answer was that he had never seen a radiator like that and simply replaced it with a conventional upper element, core, and lower element and the L+M radiator was destroyed for scrap.

As a result a weeks production was lost with this machine being in hospital and 24 hours of labor was wasted involving several junior mechanics and the journeyman mechanic who was described as the company fool, almost $20,000.00 USD plus labor cost was expended when this money could have been saved by simply listening to said journeyman mechanic (me) and the" pass the buck, double talk, The radiator shop was at fault shop talk was the reason the radiator was replaced, BECAUSE THEY DID WORK FOR US BEFORE AND THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING.

So ended this tale on that day only to be followed by many more instances which I was fortunate to witness over 22 years and have many many laughs.

Sometimes auto parts dealers such as NAPA will carry replacement radiators. And there are company's that specialize in radiators that may have a less expensive replacement.

Good story, well told, hard to live thru:thumbsup:

Thank you texasjohn for the compliment,

working in industries such as mining, the quota is king and the maintenance department is a parasite of the production department, and four people have died as a result -the latest one six weeks ago The steel bin he was under with his dump truck waiting to be loaded folded over on top of him while he was in the drivers seat killing him instantly- the bin rotted due to salt corrosion and it was constantly overloaded beyond its 150 ton capacity.

The bin and bin suppport legs simply folded under, crushed the truck almost beyond recognition-the only way you knew it was a Mack truck was that the hood and bulldog were left intact.

The bin it replaced was 83 years old when they destroyed it in the upgrading portion of the surface repairs and it was made of 10000-12000 pound concrete mix-go figure.

I will send you a PM when I get a few minutes.
