I think you are right. That is one big honking chunk of steel to tear out . It would be different if it was hollow but if it was mine I wouldn't sweat it.

Failure of the 2" bar is the LAST component of that "system" that will fail! (5/8 pin, reciever tube, reciever frame/mounting, bolts to the truck frame)
Run it!

I would suggest taking the modified receiver to a testing lab, have them attach it to a solid mounting point with a pin though the new hole you drilled, and then apply 30,000 lbs of pulling force to the shackle. If it don't break then, you are good to go!!!! :)

There's no problem with the receiver... and I'm not sure what you mean by "stinger"?

Out here in rural Oregon, the the part of a trailer hitch which slides into the receiver is called a "stinger". I was under the impression that it was fairly common terminology, but maybe not. We west coast rednecks are an isolated and inbred bunch...
