the water soaks through, but the silt doesn't.
i'm curious about the silt, not the water. you said it stops the silt, doesn't that mean the fabric will eventually clog once enough silt gets "stopped"? i know that's not correct because it seems most folks recommend the fabric.

The filter fabric you want is the heavy stuff sold to farmers and road contractors--not that lightweight box store stuff that comes on a little 3' foot roll.
ah ha, i had no idea, i was thinking it was just the basic stuff. but it makes total sense now that you say that. where do i get the "real deal" then? not many stores where i live now.

Your local farm supply might have it. Otherwise, call one of the local nurseries or look in the yellow pages.

They also make filter "socks" that slip over the pipe. Often found where the pipe is sold.
