RED diesel question?

In Massachusetts you need insurance and a plate to drive a tractor over the road. The only time you can drive a tractor on the road without a plate is if you have a farm plate issued to you and you are within 2 miles of your farm. A farm plate can be swapped from vehicle to vehicle (all of which need to be inspected by the State police BTW). They give you the two mile grace with the intent/thinking that the farm plate may be on your truck for example.
The other option is to run a commercial plate. That costs $10/year yet the registry will try to charge $100/year everytime they send the renewal form. Don't ask me how I know... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'm glad i don't live in a draconian state like that... All they are doing is making it hard on the people that grow the food. I fthe economy ever colapses, states that have those anti-farmer geared laws shopuld be last in line for food distribution.. and what the heck.. instead of getting any free hand outs.. they should have to jump thru some kind of hoop to get their 'share'.

Yeah, well what can I say, Mass isn't the greatest state in the union for a lot of reasons. The Mass Farm Bureau fights a lot of these laws. I'm not sure that it's all that bad of an idea; if a farmer in an overloaded truck with poor brakes ran into your new vehicle wouldn't you want him to have insurance? Actually, wouldn't HE want to have insurance? Or should you pay more insurance because he grows the food? It's a pretty good deal in some respects. I apply for a farm plate and I can run it on my pick-up, dump truck, trailer, tractor, whatever.

You bring in a different aspect... overloaded// bad brakes.. poorly kept equipment.. that all could easilly be a road vehicle.. like a truck.. same setup.. overloaded.. bad brakes.. etc. It's not the that it is a tractor or a farmer.. it's how they keep their equipment. Doesn't matter who hit me in that situation.. if they were at fault.. either thier car insurance or their homeowners ins is getting sued. if the vehicle was not road worthy or was otherwise dangerous.. they are liable...

Well my point is, I guess, that if they need a plate and insurance (which they do in Mass) they also require an inspection which means the vehicle (truck, tractor, etc.) has to be road-worthy. To me, that is the key point. You're right; if they don't have a plate/don't require an inspection you can always sue their car or howeowners...if you live through the accident!
Of course you can never prepare for someone who overloads their equipment no matter what kind of safety inspection they went through prior to that (that was a bad example for me to use I guess).
