I Have just put 50 Hours on my B7500 and I would like to switch to a full synthetic 15w-40 oil. I am looking at Red Line and Amsoil. Redline claims that they use better base stock and claims that theirs has better wear protection and theirs cuts down on friction better. I am open for any sugestions.

Has anyone had any experience with Red Line?

Haven't used Red Line so I can't comment. Been with Amsoil since 1988.I use the heavy duty marine 15w-40 Amsoil in both tractors. Darn good oil. I'm sure Red Line is also, among many others. I'll stick with Amsoil oil and their filters.

Oil is oil.... buy the cheapest brand that you can find and forget about changing it. Changing oil and using new oil filters is a waste of money. Besides, you will be long gone before that engine dies a natural death. Save your money and buy a 6 pack of beer with it. In fact, get someone else's drained oil and use that. It still has a lot of good life left in it. Trying to help you save some money with sage advise from the Junkman... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I really don't know which one is best for you.
I only know every time the word Amsoil is mentioned in a thread, it is always immediately followed by around 50 bickering posts. Sometimes an Amsoil thread get so heated, the thread gets locked.
Why is that? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

both good oils and I will just say this, "oil is not oil".

If that were true you would not have groups 1 through 4.

Look at the what it has in it; if people did that they would see that all oils are not the same.

I use Mobil 1 Delvac in my diesels. The diesel club in my area (for trucks) have guys who have paid tons of money just to compare their oil analysis sheets at meetings. From what I have heard from them, they seem to agree that the Mobil 1 Delvac and Amsoil are the only group IV true synthetic oils. Nobody seems to agree on which is better, the Mobil 1 Delvac or the Amsoil stuff. It seems to be a rather moot issue to me since both oils will apparently provide proper lubrication for a longer period of time than I'll keep in in my engine. Being that I can drive to my local Sam's Club and pick up the Mobil 1 Delvac for half the cost of Amsoil, you can guess what I use.

Most of the guys, and I'm sort of in that group, have their diesels turned up to produce huge amounts of power. Now, here is my theory; why would I chance a $15,000 performance diesel engine's life just to prove that my oil will last longer?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif For the Cummins Fleetguard filter and 12 quarts of Mobil 1 Delvac synthetic oil, it costs me about $42 and 6 or 7 minutes of my time to change.

There is no way in the world that I'm going to go for the record setting extended drain period with my oil and chance toasting a $15,000 engine, especially when neither oil company will replace your engine if you toast it by going the extended oil drain intervals. I only drive my truck about 12,000 miles per year. I change the oil and filter every 6 months / 6000 miles. So, in a year I spend $84.00 and maybe 15 minutes of my time. Am I going to change my ways and gamble with my expensive diesel engine to maybe save $5.00 or $10.00 and 7 minutes a year?? The answer to that is a resounding *ell no! I'm not a gambler. I work too hard for my money. I'm staying with the conservative guaranteed safe bet.

I'm sure Red Line and Amsoil are fine oils. As a matter of fact, I've even tried to bid on some Amsoil on eBay to try it once in my truck. Unfortunately it always goes for way more than my Mobil 1 Delvac sells for, so I've never had the chance to try any. I'll keep trying every so often. Heck, if someone who reads this is a true believer in Amsoil and can get me a deal on 12 quarts, I'll gladly try it. I just won't go over my 6 month or 6000 mile sure thing schedule with it. If somebody gets me a great price on the Amsoil oil and is so sure that it is still good then, I'll even send it all to them to use free after I drain it, as long as they pay the shipping. I'll be finished with it.

Hey, some of you Amsoil guys, get me some prices on the oil and filters and I'll give it a fair shake. I'll even spring for a test of my Mobil 1 Delvac at 6000 miles and then get an oil test on the Amsoil at 6000 miles and gladly post the results. It won't hurt my feelings if the Amsoil proves to be better. If I can get a reasonable price on it, I'll gladly switch from my beloved Delvac. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

AndyM- Most of these topics get heated since most people never get the oil tested. Without getting it tested you never know how the oil peformed; hence, you get the "I am not doing that" or the "I do not".....

Mostly it comes down to $$$$ (price of oil) and extended drains.

I will say this, do not knock it unless you have tried it. Then look at the oil tests and see how them come out.

Here is a little Webpage I made. It has some info about mobil1, Amsoil, extended drain etc.

Hey gsxr1100, find some Amsoil distributor to take me up on my challange. As you can see, I'm pretty darn open minded about comparing it. I don't think you can get a better comparison that using the Amsoil and the Mobil 1 Delvac in the same engine for the same amount of time under the same circumstances and then having each oil tested. If need be, PM me if you can get me a deal on 12 quarts of Amsoil. I'm just not going to pay the premium plus price for the oil when I know what I'm running is good enough. If Amsoil is better, I suppose I'd have to pay the going rate from then on if I'm sold on it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I'm in no real big rush, I just changed the oil and filter in my engine only about 1000 miles ago. However, I can have it tested when I take it out in 5000 miles and have that info posted and available for all to see while using the Amsoil under the same conditions, posting the oil test results of the Amsoil once it gets 6000 miles on it. If you can't tell, I'm actually sort of curious about the prospect. I could actually be a "non-believer / infidel" of Amsoil who could be converted. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Most people will not put enough hours on a tractor or miles on a car in a year to make the price difference, or the quality difference, between the cheapest dino oil (that meets the manufacturer specifications) and a synthetic worth thinking about, much less arguing about.

If I was putting hundred of hours on one or more tractors or driving tens of thousands of miles like an over the road truck driver in a year, then I'd be doing things like analyzing oil and be paying more attention to it. Why? Because under such circumstance, oil and oil filters would represent a bigger chunk of my budget.

The simple answer for most people in most circumstances is to use the least expensive oil that meets the manufacturers weight and API classification recommendations.

Need to use your tractor (or car) in extreme conditions, then use a synthetic. Or use a synthetic just because you want to. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As I noted in previous threads, you get what you pay for.

Back to the thread topic. Redline or Amsoil is good oils and you can't go wrong.
