Red Maple poison to horses?

Check with your Ag Extention Agent...they usually have information on the local problem plants. Cornell has a pretty comprehensive database but it's difficult to navigate. Here's one that's easier:

ASPCA: Animal Poison Control Center: Toxic Plants to Horses

I breed the silly things so I'm probably more paranoid than most. I'd rather have run-in sheds than trees (although I have a few) because I can almost guarantee that if lightning strikes or a limb falls, my most expensive mare will be under that tree.

The nightshade will just flat out kill them real fast. I still don't know how my horse lived through it. It's supposed to be impossible but on the way to the vet in the trailer he caughed up a lot of it and the rest came out his back end so the effects were at least limited I guess. It's like a very severe case of colic.

I kinda doubt you have them up there because of the much cooler climate but I'm sure you have your own host of toxic weeds to deal with. It doesn't matter where you live in this country there is going to be something that can kill a horse around. When we lived in Pa it was the yew trees and all the rhododendron growing in the woods. That stuff will make a goat explode even.

The lightening storm we had last night made me nervous about one getting hit. I can't ever catch them durring a storm. They always just bunch up in the middle of the pasture and turn their butts to the wind. I guess it's better than standing near the fence or one of the well heads. We still have one old turbine pump with the 20 foot tall steel pipe standing next to it. That thing gets hit almost every time we have lightening.

Thanks for the link. It has been saved and filed.

All you guys: thanks for your help, Calypso appears to be fine now. The blood work doesn't have any red maple poison in it, but I'll be continuing my tree slaughter work for peace of mind. ( His name is "Payback Calypso", but we call him "Calvin", of "Calvin and Hobbs" )
