reduce heating bill with Wood Stove

What health issues? Other than handling wood? I use a zero clearance stove and didnt think there was an issue?

IIRC, Gale has a daughter with severe asthma problems.

My wood splitter was under $30 and it doesn't use any gas.

I think most people who live in rural areas need to have a chainsaw whether they burn wood or not. Sure, a portion of its cost goes toward firewood, but certainly not all.

I need a tractor wood burning or not. So that is a partial usage too, and in my case a very small part.

Good discussion. I have a small Irish stove on a brick pad in my 12 year old house. I also have a geothermal heat pump, so I don't pay all that much for heat anyway. But I have 100 ac of forest and abundant dead trees - and folks usually who want to cut on shares. I do have a 18 year old Stihl chainsaw that still runs beautifully, and a splitter I bought lightly-used for $400 (I almost never buy new stuff).

The stove is small - only takes wood 18 in or shorter - but very efficient. I have it rigged with a intake pipe from the outside (3 inch pipe actually comes up through the brick - so it doesn't pull cold air in windows and doors. I can't even smell wood burning except when I stoke it. Although I have a lot of allergies, it's never bothered me. But I do have relatives with serious lung issues who cannot be around stoves.

I like having the stove for backup heat should the power go out, and for use on really cold days when you want a hot room. I almost never start it unless the temp outside is below freezing - just doesn't pay.

I think getting and using a stove for anyone is a decision based on all the kinds of things I mention above, plus the desire simply to cut and split wood for the cathartic effects.

You figure your new $10K ATV into your "savings" vs oil heat?

Had this discussion with a coworker; you are spending more money and time than you are saving!

Coworker always has one of 3 saws broken and fixing. Now I need a trailer....now my 2wd atv isn't big enough I need a new one. On and on.

To each their own I guess but that is my opinion.

Some of us have the tools needed anyway.

Personally i had a chainsaw 5 years before i started burning for heat. I have an ATV for hunting/play.

Those who live in the north or east save thousands in just a few short years by burning wood. Simple. I dont make $70/hr so there is little oportunity cost to cutting wood.

I do enjoy it at this point in my life and hopefully will continue.

First of all it is not that hard to keep a chain saw running unless you abuse. Keep the old gas, keep oil in for the bar and
keep the chain sharp. I do need new chains every so often, but they are only $20 the most.
As far spending 10K only an idiot spends that much for an ATV. Polaris had a rebate on them and I got a new 400 sportmans for
$4900. I have had a suzuki king quad for 17 years and just bought a new one to replace it and sold it for $500 so it did not owe me
anything. But this was before I ever bought a wood stove. I run a game preserve, run a boarding kennel and train some dog and
have over 106 acres and it comes in very handy. I also use the ATV for training the dogs. I already have a JD gator that
I use for the game preserve and kawaski mule 4010, and JD 50 hp tractor for brush hogging and mowing I had all this stuff before
I ever got the wood stove. When you have land you need equipment. Other then buying a wood splitter for $900 at tractor supply I have
yet to buy anything for cutting wood. Then I waited two year before I bought that, I used my friends. So do I use the equipment I have to save me work, you bet I do. Would I have bought this stuff to just burn wood no. Like you said to each their own, please do not assume so much.

One does not have to go off the deep end of the heating with wood pool for sure. The number that should not be around wood heat I expect is very low. Not big on being PC but if it is a health concern then it needs to be addressed. I would like to try the external wood furnace system if it was not for the cost. As kids we cut our wood and stayed warm. Initially the house was so drafty we got plenty of fresh air still. :)

Hey MR "IT" from upstate NY

Justify the "wood saves me xx amount per year" I don't buy it!

Looks like you enjoy what you are doing with your time and I can appreciate that as it is your time and your dime.

As for the Polaris Sportsman 400 costing $4900 well...not so much up here; my 500 cost almost double that in '01.

As for Geothermal heat; pay up front big $$ for long term savings (10-15yrs) till you need to pony up again to replace the pump/furnace unit.

Even if you were to have $15k into an ATV (or even better a UTV), chainsaw, splitter, wood stove, and other various items used to burn wood it still works out to be a cheaper option for most. Everything listed will have a 20 year minimum life expectancy (I still use an 86 Honda 3 wheeler). A conservative number would be 150 gallons of fuel oil is equal to 1 cord of wood. That works out to about 450~500 gallons of fuel oil for 3 cord. Or about $1500 in fuel oil costs. So in about 10 years you will have paid off that $15k investment and in another year or two you would have paid off consumable costs (like gas, oil, chains, etc). That's assuming you have land with wood on it. It also doesn't take in account that you could use the ATV and chainsaw for non wood heating tasks. if you buy wood then your investment would be much smaller, no chainsaw, no splitter, no ATV.

So now you need to decide what your time is worth. This is not as easy as you would think. I find splitting wood is kind of therapeutic being outdoors and no stress, not sure how to put a value on that. There's your time vs the exercise you get. If you don't have time then it may never be worth it. The same can be said about doing your own maintenance to vehicles you own. Between the cost of the tools and your time it might not be worth it. For others it makes sense.
