I can understand the manufacturers "original owner" clause on lifetime warranty. People have been known to go to swap meets etc and buy known defective items for a couple of bucks and then file a claim for replacement with the manufacturer. LL Bean has a big problem with this situation.

"Lifetime" of an item is as long as you own it. Once sold the lifetime is over.

I'm not suggesting the OP is in this situation, just a general comment.

This should be a non-issue. The way it should be done is for the manufacture to require the defective item to be sent to them, thus taking it out of "circulation" and a replacement is issued. This gets the defective parts out of use and maintains good customer relations at a minor expense.

I think that he was referring to someone who buys a "junk item" at a swap meet, get it replaced and then resell the shiny new one.

Depends on if the warranty is Lifetime or limited Lifetime..

Sears was famous for their Craftsman Lifetime hand tool warranty...

Most Lifetime warranties will also have another out... Lifetime of the item... which I find sneaky and then there is the abuse or not intended use clause which includes mods...

I reported a failure to the Consumer Product Safety Commission years ago... it took about a year and then I had several visits from CPSC investigators and in the end it resulted in a recall...

As others have said... getting to the right person in the corp structure is often the key.

Sometimes it is as simple of asking for clarification or confirmation so you have a name/documentation to go with your findings...

I bought a Pro Pride hitch off craigs list . it had a crack in the main head . I called the owner of the company ( his personal number is on the instructions ) I figured I would get a machine , he answered , I described the problem , sent him some pics . I even told him I bought it used , I was letting him know since it could have been a manufacturing problem . His response was , " I was looking for that , my new welder forgot to weld 3 units on the back side , we found 2 , you are the third . I will send you a new one tomorrow . Promise me to destroy the old one " Brand new one was here in 3 days .

I guess it's up to Reese but if it was my company I would want to get that back in my hands. I wouldn't care if it was bought second hand. I would be much more concerned about someone shady buying the same hitch, keeping the receipt, and then swapping parts with hopes of having a catastrophic accident and a law suit. A few bucks now will get you some good PR vs a grieving father saying his soon to be son-in-law (that he felt his princess could do much better) was in a horrible wreck because the Reese hitch he borrowed failed. Maybe it's a long shot but it's not too much of a long shot to have a weekend warrior try to weld that with his Harbor Freight 110v mig welder. A lawyer would have no problems suing saying that it should never have broken in the first place and when Reese was contacted about the damage they wouldn't stand behind the warranty. Even if Reese spells it out very well in the warranty it clearly wouldn't stop a lawyer or a jury from punishing Reese.

Had an early Reese PRO SC 14k sway control/equalizing hitch head where part of the casting that kept the trunnion bar ends bent on one side and broke on the other resulting in loss of one of the bars. Reese phone support kicked me up to an engineer and they sent the bar, trunnion end and hitch head that was noticeably stronger in key spots plus another box to send the old hitch head back.

You may need to go up the chain a bit for someone to understand that Reese may need to find out if this was abused or defective.

Reese e-mailed me this morning requesting photos so they must have received my report. We'll see...
