I can't agree enough about your sentiments about unions. I grew up in Detroit where auto strikes seemed to be a constant thing. You get kinda sick of hearing them whine when you see how much more than the average worker they got already. My dad worked for Motorola as a regional sales manager which sold security systems to the big three. I don't think we were living as well as the average auto line worker.
As far as the cars go, I finally did make the switch to US built cars. While their quality still isn't quite up to foreign standards they do seem to be a bit cheaper. Besides, I have grown quite accustomed to the "land yatch" sized vehicles which have not been produced by a foreign maker. However, back in the early 80's while in Detroit my first 5 new vehicles were Toyota's. You can imagine the abuse I took in a town where they would actually shoot out the windows of an auto dealership if they had the nerve to stay open on Saturdays. Plus, my wifes entire family worked for GM but I managed to talk her into buying a Toyota for her first vehicle too. Once her dad saw it and heard what we paid for it...he couldn't complain much. Back then you couldn't beat the value.
