reinstalling tire on rim

Another tool that works well for tire irons, which wasn't designed for that purpose, is a nail bar. There are even miniatures that do well for smaller tires bikes and cycles. Common brands are Estwing, Stanley and at one time Vaughn made the best in my opinion. The 90° end makes a decent handle and the opposite end has about the correct angle of off set. I knock the sharp corners off a little with a file and polish it up just a bit.

Sounds like you're talking about the Wonder Bar and of course you're right. Mine has been handy for lots of things.

I was watching tv one time and these icelandic mechanics were changing a tire on a toyota truck. They were out on the arctic ice, on their way to the north pole, and needed a way to seat the tire on the rim. they had it on the rim, but it still needed to be seated. What they did was take a bottle of butane used for refilling lighters, and sprayed quite a bit in the tire. Next they tossed a match at it, and all the butane ignited, and the explosion seated the tire on the rim. Now this will only work on a tube less tire, and is an easy way to get hurt, but will work in a pinch.

I was having a heck of a time getting my bead to seat on my large rear R4 even using a ratchet and web strap to get it almost seated and soapy water to get it to seal, so after about 3 hours of trying, I tried the above mentioned trick using some starting fluid sprayed in the tire and then a stand off torch approach using a lighther and the starter fluid as a flame thrower. The whole thing took seconds and was no drama at all. There was no noise or flame from the tire. It just sort of popped all the way onto the rim. Man, was that great. I'll have no issue doing this again.
