To all it may concern.

I gave up following this thread about ten posts back. I thought that it would have faded out by now, but apparently not. For my part, I think I get the concept now, and am ready to move on.

If anyone else cares to contribute here for the benefit of others equally as ignorant as I on the subject, by all means, please carry on.

When any DC run coil is shut off the collapsing field of the coil becomes a generator for an instant, in my former work we used to see this when magnetic locks and magnetic door holders were shut off, in 24vdc systems this "snap" could generate 25000 volts at virtually no amps but would ruin sensitive electronics and burn contacts, and since the polarity reverses the diode will protect stuff.

Diodes only allow one way passage of power. My Kubota's are the same way actually.
