Reloading for Dummies?

YES! I was completely surprised, came home and walked into the computer room and there was a the brand new Dillon 750XL and she had ordered the shooter package, powder, primers, and bullets. She had everything I needed to start reloading. I was very shocked, since we bought the tractor this year I figured the reloader would be off the table for a while.

Please tell your wife that I think she is a very thoughtful, loving and accomplished person.

Newer equipment may have changed things a bit, but the best piece of advice I can offer regarding progressive presses is this - pick a powder that all but fills the case if possible. Ensures no double charges. Enjoy and be careful!

You can't go wrong with Dillon stuff. I have a 550 and a 1050 that has a Mark 7 autodrive on it for my personal stuff. Use the 1050 mainly it is an awesome machine. It will make a lot of ammo in a short period of time. Seems there is never a shortage of people willing to help expend it.

Warning: Reloading can be habit forming.

ABC's of reloading is a good book for beginners. If you know someone that reloads watching them is the best training of all. Reloading is a task of (good) habits. Repetition important to accuracy. If time spent reloading is not a factor a single stage is the way to go as far as simplicity and accuracy. When reloading time is precious the cost of a progressive becomes worthwhile.

Exactly. Why I use a single stage Rockchucker. I basically only handload long range (300-500 yard) pills, weigh each charge on a triple beam scale with an electronic trickler to get each charge exactly where I want it, prep my cases carefully, anneal them for consistent case mouth tension, turn necks for concentricity, debur and uniform flash holes and jump my pills for optimum accuracy. I demand sub moa accuracy at 300 yards.

I use custom machined John Whidden bushing dies, dies made to the exact chamber dimensions of the particular rifle I'm loading for. Each die set is matched to the rifle chamber and I point my bullets with a Whidden pointing die as well. Each of my rifles has it's own die set that stays with the rifle for the life of that rifle.

If I was loading handgun pills, I'd use an automated press like a Dillon for instance. But for the most part, I don't. The handgun loads I do load are mostly for my 460 Smith and I don't load that many.

If I was handloading handgun rounds, I'd have a Dillion. I don't find mechanized reloading accurate enough for my needs.

Finally, 'dummies' should never attempt reloading. All a dummy will do is cause a round to blow up in their face with bad results.

I tell her all the time how lucky I am to have her in my life.

Reloading is not difficult but there is a lot to it. It's something one has to be focused on and it does take time. There is very little forgiveness for mistakes. At best an expensive gun is destroyed. At worst the shooter can be injured.

I believe that I covered that when I started this thread. ;)
