This is as about as far off topic as you can get, but it's one of those things that just has to be shared.

The photo was emailed to me fairly anonymously, so I don't know the exact source, but it's quite possible that some of you may have already seen it. It's an incredible panoramic view of the world from the new space station. It was done in such a way as to portray the entire planet at night. The resulting images of city lights across the globe yields not only fantastic beauty, but some startling realities of our world.

Things to look for:

- Canada's population is almost exclusively along the U.S. border.
- There is a high population concentration along the coast of the Mediterranean.
- Notice the development of Israel compared to the rest of the Arab countries.
- Pay particular attention to the Nile River, the Outback of Australia and the Trans Siberian Rail Route.
- In the east, note the striking difference between North and South Korea.

<font color=red>WARNING!!!</font color=red> This is one hefty photo (about 535K), so unless you've got a peppy internet connection, you might want to get a cup of coffee while it's downloading.

Having said all that, please take a gander at our world at night. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Thanks to Boots, we now have an alternative source for the picture (this is good 'cuz I'm running low on space on my own server and may have to delete the above image soon). These have some words overlaid on them, but they're basically the same pict:

Same resolution as original, but is "jpx" format, which my Mac/Netscape browser didn't understand.
Smaller file (386K) -- same size expanded, and the quality is still quite good.

Cool picture Harv. Added it to my collection. Would be interesting to see a photo, say 20 years ago, and compare it to this one.

Looks like the light is on and everyone's home!

No wonder the world is have a lack of electricity/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif.

You were right. Truly remarkable.

It's amazing how much of the world's land mass is lightly populated versus the heavily populated areas.

I like it. Wouldn't it be something to have an opportunity to spend some time up on the space station just to see what our world looks like? And to get a view into deep space from somewhere above our atmosphere? Maybe in the next life.

Great tip, Harv/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Thanks!!

I grabbed a couple window-captures off of it, after spending 20 min. or so "just-lookin'".

Would love a print, ... Do you (or does anyone) have any idea where one might be obtained?

Derek,

[[[Would be interesting to see a photo, say 20 years ago, and compare it to this one.]]]

Sure would, ... and would be scary to see one 20-50 years in the future!

Robert,
[[[It's amazing how much of the world's land mass is lightly populated versus the heavily populated areas.]]]

And it's misleading, if thinking in terms of how much more "room" there is!

There are reasons for "settled-areas" being where they are. Climate, resources, and terrain have people "crowded" into "population-centers", and if desirable areas of relatively undeveloped "land mass" (Amazonian rain-forest, for example) are to remain, at some point the populating has to taper off.

Now and then, lemmings seem to think "Seems like there are about enough-of-us now!" Maybe they could teach us a thing-or-two. /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

Thanks, Boots! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I've modified my original post to include this info, since the original photo might go away before too long. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I actually saw a print of that view at Kitt Peak Observatory in AZ... they had them for sale in the visitor center. Quite a photo, for sure! They had some real nice posters of the earth, as well as other planets. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
