Remember the winter of 1977 ?

Yep....I believe this was the winter many businesses and manufacturing plants in the mid-west were forced to curtail production and operations due to skyrocketing fuel costs.

Our school district claosed for a week in Jan. 1977 because of the high fuel prices. Makes you wonder if something like that could happen again.

Coldest I've ever experienced was at the North Pole in 84. My sub and another rendevoused up there. Minus 55 and windy! On calm days we used to take turns peeing off the sail planes. The pee froze before it hit the ice below and fell with the sound of pure crystal! Great fun!

The other thing I remember is how DRY it was! Chapped lips all over the boat! Chapstick was worthless, so we used Bag Balm.

Made many snowmobile trips into Yellowstone National Park that winter. The coldest day that I remember was -52. Park service employees put 55-gallon drums burning wood every 5 miles. Warming huts were just starting to be built. Old Faithful and Madison Junction were the only inside warm places beside West Yellowstone, Montana.
That was some of the best riding I ever did as you were bundled up for that extreme.

I remember shoveling the driveway and piling the snow up higher and higher on either side because I couldn't throw it far enough. Then the blizzard hit. Next morning, no car. Just the little ball on the end of the antenna sticking out of the snow drift. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif And that was a 74 Chevy Malibu, not exactly a tiny car.

You know, you may be right about snow in Alaska.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I do remember the 1977 winter,it being so cold in the east an Anchorage was having a balmy 40 degrees/slush for a few days. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif The National Geographic article that was based on this winter, talked about this weather extreme, slush in Alaska and freezing in the lower 48..I guess that is why the name of the story was..."The year the weather went wild"

Our local schools shutdown for a week,I was in college that year and our geology professor kept going back to his office and looking at the barometer...it was falling like a rock, needless to say our govenor came on the radio statewide and it was the emergency alarm buzzing...like they do when they say this is a test yadayadayada, anyway our govenor was giving the weather forecast...go home stay home.....man,talk about a run on the grocery stores...needless to say we just got the edge of the blizzard, that afternoon the sun was shining...but freezing cold...

I hate to say it but we could really use one of those winters all across the midwest and west. The drought is really going to take it's toll. I can't believe the condition of alot of the lakes and reservoirs. I've never seen them this low.

You are exactly right...last year I remeber the Rocky mountains snow depth was real low and it was getting to be a major concern for the people living in the west, due to the resevoirs etc. I feel for the ranchers and farmers that depend so much on the land to make a modest honorable living, the droughts can put the hurts on you so bad.It is hard enough during years of good weather. I hope this drought is not affecting or causing you any problems.

Uhhhhhhhhhh....Pete, you sure was taking a big risk here. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif What precluded 'other things' from freezing at the same time? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
