1969 Plymouth Barracuda, w/ 318 V8, kind of a turqoise color. Was one of the old family cars that was still sitting around the farm when I got my license. My Father said, and I quote. If you can get it going, you can have it. So I did.
Boy was it cool to have my own wheels. Talk about Freedom

At the age of 16 I acquired a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner with 383 Magnum. Worked very hard to earn the money for that car. Loved that car. Had an older brother with a 1974 Road Runner and while cruising around town we would always "Beep-Beep" at each other as we passed.

At 17 I joined the Air Force and had the engine and transmission rebuilt while I was in basic training. The car was in Georgia and I got stationed in Sacramento California. Being afraid to drive it for that long of a distance on a brand new "not broken-in" drive train, I sold it to my irresponsible younger brother on a payment schedule who made one payment, wrecked (totalled) it, then quit making payments. There was nothing that I could do from California. That was my hard luck lesson on loaning money to family.

Yep...it was a '62 Plymouth Belvedere with push button automatic and a 318 cid engine.

My father had worked for the Maryland Dept of Forests and Parks (now called Dept. of Natural Resources). He knew the car. This car had been part of the DNR fleet..used for some pursuit, lotta patroling and other duties. Basically, it was a lighter duty cop car.

Like most Chrysler products of the era...rear end was light and would easily spin out on a wet road.

I can't say it was a 16 year old boy's dream car, but it was pretty good transportation for several years.

Mark in NH, your Dad and my Dad must've gone to the same school! We had a 40 Chev 4/door setting down by the barn that hadn't run in several months. Dad said I could have it if I could get it running. Well, being the one who got it to NOT run, it took my about 45 minutes to chase a coil down, install it, and charge the battery. Dang things burn out if you hot wire them incorrectly! /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Hello , my first car was a 64 dart with a blown motor , my dad rebuilt the motor and he made me put it in and get it running, after of course, I paid for everything myself. I use to do my homework in the front seat for a whole year until I got it running. Ugliest car to this day I have ever seen- it was fun though./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

62 Chevy Biscayne... 2 speed auto, straight six, 4 door... Bought for $500 from an old lady that had it stored in a 19 century barn... Only about 20K miles, but, lots of rust... Painted it and ran if for a year or so (good car for driving to school!). Sold for $1200 and moved on to the next (70 Plymouth Duster)...

My first car was a 66 1/2 ford mustang. I bought it for $750 in 1971. It had a 289 engine, automatic transmission and was the tourguoise color that faded into an ugly green. I had it repainted to corvette blue in 1973. My cousin put a holley 500 on it. I put cragar SS mags on it, and installed air-shocks with the valve stem for the air supply in the car under the driver's seat (remember the bumper height laws?) I also had a craig pioneer 8 track in it. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

1978 Datsun 1 tonne ute. paid $800 and sold it for $3500.

Needed a bit of work. Went to pick up my girlfriend (now wife) and she wasn't impressed when she had to hop in thru the drivers door as the passanger one wouldn't open.

Oh well, not as romantic as some of yours but we had to start somewhere.

Cheers
