Thanks for the photo. I agree about the "smart phone" comment. Sometimes they ain't so smart.

You could always turn off auto-update and manually check each week. If you have a number of apps on your phone and they are all set to auto-update you'll be downloading updates almost constantly. Be nice if you could specify when updates are performed, like between 1 and 3 AM when you are not likely to be using the phone for anything else.

I would get the Mule gate latch while there too. It is 12v also.

If you are only opening your gate 90 degrees, you can make a set of hinges that will make the gate rise on the outside, & lean in, when opening to either direction. Then the weight of the gate will make it close without a spring. Not sure how fast you want it to close.

To do so, make your hinge pins adjustable and stagger them from plumb when the gate is closed, but plumb & level the gate when closed. The more you stagger the top hinge pin from the bottom, The more the gate raises & leans when open & the faster it closes when turned loose.

If it has to swing both ways there used to be pretty common self centering gate hinges that looked pretty much like the ones you have, except the strap part had an upside down V notch in them so when the gate opened either way, it rode up on the V, then gravity returned it to center to close. Of course both hinges have to be positioned with the L up, like your lower hinge. Maybe they don't make them any more because I couldn't to find a photo of them. They'd be easy to make from your hinges but would wear out faster than the old heavy duty ones I remember.
As far as the the trunk/door latch, it would be great if it is remote control, all you have to do is get the car key with it.
Here's a photo of a similar one but the whole hinge is cut at an angle instead of just a V notch.

I haven't seen any of those "V" self closing hinges for a long time. Most seem to be a spring or this type.

i now do access control for sheeple, you could issue each sheep a id card, train the sheep to walk in front of the gate, add a long range prox reader to the pole as they pass in front of the gate their badge would be read. upon reading the badge the 48 volt mag lock would open allowing the sheep to enter. only problem is you would have to have an emergency egress plan for the fire department or in your case pita.
