If you don't have a thick piece, several thin ones stacked will work, too.

So far, nobody has been able to explain what was dangerous about my way....to me, it was no more dangerous than the common practice of standing in back of the tractor and juggling the 3-point lift lever while you hook up an implement.

Its not, if you pay good attention, and don't get in the way of the bucket, you should be fine. As a matter of fact you didn't get hurt did you?. but the piece of flat stock would have pulled the rod with one person, and been slicker and easier, but hey you can try that next time.
