Rest in Peace
MDNY, not a dumb question at all, and of course, to determine how many you need (if you need any at all), you first have to determine what implements you intend to use, both now and in the future. One will power a hydraulic top link, a second one could power a hydraulic side link (top 'n tilt) to make it quicker and easier to change angles on a rear blade or box blade. How about another to angle a rear blade to push or pull snow or dirt to the side. Do you need one for a hydraulic chute on a snow blower? How about a hydraulic post hole digger instead of a PTO powered one? How big a tractor and what are you going to use it for? The hay baler I've used, and the haybine, only needed one, but I know a guy who uses a haybine that needs 3; one to raise and lower, one to turn it (not PTO powered), and one to move it right or left. Well, that's a start. Maybe someone else can add some more uses.
