Mowing removeal of stored 1000 pto shaft to replace 540.

Needle nose vice grips work well for this job,remember to line up snapring tines with flat spot on shaft,put slight pressure while installing you should feel it go into place,you could use a screwdriver to push into place if not in its groove (turn slowly during whole procedure ).

Lets see if I've got it. Over 40 years ago I looked at some John Deere tractors while considering a purchase. As I remember, some of the tractors had 1000 rpm pto shafts coming out of the rear end parallel to the axle and I've wondered from time to time, how it could ever be of any use at that angle. Now I'm thinking that the 1000 rpm shaft wasn't even hooked up, just "stored" there until such time as it was put in to replace the 540 rpm shaft. Is that correct?

You're correct. The pto shaft aimed at LH rear wheel for for storage of extra shaft only. I always thought IHC tractors had JD beat by having both pto shafts(540 & 1000) aimed rearward and operable.
