removing 25 year old evergreen shub.

A chain and my truck is what I use to pull shrubs. Wrap around the trunk twice about a foot up and and hook back on to the chain as close to the trunk as possible.

A farmer near me was killed doing this a few years ago. Guess he got frustrated at the slow pace, left some slack in the chain and got a little running start - the tractor flipped over backwards onto him. Dead on the spot. He didn't have a FEL but did have suitcase weights in the front.

one very easy and safe way it to use an old tire, preferably a larger diameter one, wrap the chain around the trunk of the bush, then place the chain over the top of the tire as it would be for rolling, along the tread path, then hook the chain to the draw bar & drive forward, keep the tire as close to the root ball as possable and 90% of the force is then dirrected UP and OUT away so the bush should pull free pretty quickly. just make sure the tire is standing straight up and can roll slightly forward when pulling and keep the chainb straight with the tire between the drawbar & the bush stump and as close to the stump as possable. if it starts to slip then stop, pull slowly and watch for slippage some on the trunk is normal. I've pulled hundreds this way,

now if you intend to MOVE them and SAVE them then pulling is not an option as the bark will be crushed by the chain. then if saving you need to dig em out. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif when I was younger we (me and a in-law) ran a landscaping buisness from age 12 to 17 together. more than mowing laws. we pullled a lot of bushes this way as well as dug plenty. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I would not hesitate to use the BX 23 for this. That bh could do it easy!

Spiker thanks for the info. I have a 4110 jd 20 horse. 1900 pounds (tactor only) fel and blad and rake. What size tractor did you use or would this be enough weight. Also do the tire have a rim or just the tier.

Thanks.

Before I bought the tractor, I used a come-along and a chain to remove these kinds of items. Wrap the chain around the base of a big tree, attach the com-along to the chain, and wrap the cable end of the come along around the base of the shrub. It will come out, but very slowly.

Roger: yes there is a rim & partly inflated rire, the low inflation lets the chain sink in some and holds it's self stable, also put an old blanket around the chain between the tire & the pulling rig, (can be just about any thing we used an old compack pickup "1 wheel drive") The chain is hooked low on the frame/hitch or drawbar. this has the effect of attempting to squeeze the tire & rim flat, holding the chain taught but applies force to the base of the shrub of up & out. using an ax to cut a few roots also helps but can get messy as you usually have to remove tops to get at the roots...

I don't remember any specific pressure in the spare but was the spare tire from the truck which was 15" I think... we usually used the blanket, which was our seat cover, to place over it as sometimes the chian would strip off the root ball or break it and the blanket keeps the chain from going anywhere bad /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif oh we even used a chevy chivette a few times . /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
hope this hepls

up-date to shrub pulling
This after noon I said what the heck: got out the 4110 and put the back blad on and droped 160 pounds of suitcase weights on it and went to work agin on a small herd of shurbs, I took my time and used the bucket to dig down 10 inches or so in front and tried to left the srub out. No go so then I dug on the left and rigth and with some pushing lifting and back draging I was able to get the bigest out. about 4 in tap root.

I figure diging on the left and right and front broke some of the small runner. and that made the poor shrub give up the ghost.

So job done now for the big row of shrubs next week.

I am sure the 3520 would do it faster and I am still going to get one in the next month or two, but I was happy with my 4110 too.

Thanks all

Roger
