Removing and reinstalling a MMM on a BX

/ Removing and reinstalling a MMM on a BX #11
I am looking at a used BX2230 with a 60" MMM. I looked at a video on youtube showing the removal procedure for a BX MMM. It took less than 1 minute. Is the reinstallation as quick and easy? I did see another video comparing the JD system which is quite nice. That video indicated that the reinstallation of the Kubota MMM can be difficult and might require another person to help. Keep in mind that the second video was produced by a JD dealer so there is an obvious bias.

I think removing the BX MMM would be quite easy. I'm just wanting some feedback on the reinstallation.

TNhobbyfarmer,

I have a BX2350 with a 54" MMM. After doing it a few times, I am now able to remove it in about 5 minutes, or install it in about 10 minutes. The biggest trouble is getting the PTO shaft on and off. It is a VERY tight fit. I do not have a concrete surface, just a nearly flat spot next to the sheds. It doesn't bother me to get into the dirt to work. I am very satisfied with it. Good luck.

I tried not turning the wheels once, I found it was a lot harder for me. Doesn't seem to matter taking it off but its much easier to roll around and get lined up if you turn the guide wheels. I'm a little over 6' tall so maybe a long reach helps in reaching the PTO shaft.

While I have to remove a wheel to get it on, I agree with Grandad4, it's not a deal breaker, rather, probably very typical of the sub compact tractor. That mid shaft will always be hard to get to. I find the blower much easier though, as there is nothing in the way. I can lay in the dirt, (I too have no concrete) wriggle in there and attach the shaft. With the mower deck in the way, at 5' 11", my arms are way to short for me to lay down on the ground and reach over the deck. Hence, the wheel comes off.

Now I will admit, when I first tried to get the snow blower on, I found it impossible. Then I read the owners manual and followed that procedure. WALLA, went right on. Don't you just hate that?

Removal is easy. Mounting more time-consuming because of the PTO shaft...very awkward. In fact, I remove the left rear wheel, which greatly improves access to the PTO shaft. It's an extra step but saves me a bucket of cuss words.

I have found it quite easy at 66 to deal with this. I, too, raise the front end with the bucket to ease access. I have a rope to pull it under the tractor. That way I have a better angle on it and can use my legs. The back has been pretty balky this past year. A flat surface, while not a must cuts the time in half. I make sure the collar on the coupling is lubed and functioning easily prior to trying to install on the driveshaft. If it is stiff and you are under there you are going to be cursing yourself...and the tractor.

Personally, I am amazed at the number of people who assume everyone has a loader......

The pto shaft was pretty easy for me to put on. Then I put on a Bro-tek plate. Now it is a real PITA. My hand barely fits between the brake rod and Bro-tek, and the collar will snap back into run position really easily. Other than that, just do it in the right order and you should be fine.

I could put the mower on my BX in around 5 minutes. That was on my flat concrete floor. The biggest problem the first 10-12 times was the tight fit of the PTO shaft-you have to do itby feel, and until the spline edges wore some, it was a tough job getting those 21 splines to match up.

Will - You do know that it's the PTO connection at the rear that is what you take on and off, not splitting the two halfs of the shaft (with the 21 splines). These two halfs that you are splitting must be in exact alignment for the yokes of the u-joints to be in balance. The procedure is to leave the sliding shaft together (aligned yokes) and attach the rear yoke to the Mid PTO. And the mid-PTO only has 6 or so splines and is chamfered to allow it to go on more easily.

Not to beat this subject to death again, many have found it more easy to slide the deck under the tractor and attach the PTO shaft first before anything else. There's much more play this way and it's relatively easy. 5 minute tops, one person, flat floor or paved driveway, much harder in the rough.

Hope this helps.
