Thanks, I am on vacation on the east coast so I have time to think about these things but could not bring the tractor on the plane, my wife wouldn't let me!

Your right it is an LA403. I found a picture of my Tractor on my phone and it was LA 403.

I pulled the curl cylinder on my BX to replace with a warranty repaired one. It was pretty straight forward following the same procedure as described by others. The pins came out with gentle tapping with a large pin punch and hammer. For re-install, nothing had moved so pins went right in. I caught all the dripping oil in my large drain pan. Probably less than a quart. I did not use any help and after that help would probably only be in the way, or to fetch the beers.

I just had a backhoe crowd cylinder resealed. Weighs about 250 pounds. :p

The key to making the job go clean and quick is to get plugs and caps for the hydraulic fittings. Set the bucket down, supported so the cylinder is easy to access. Release all pressure by moving the controls with the engine off. (important) The cylinder should not be holding anything in position. That's the job of your bucket supports. Undo a cylinder port and immediately cap / plug the hose and cylinder. Do the second port. I had A single rag to catch the spillage. Drive the a pin out, while supporting the cylinder with a wood block. You don't want the cylinder to drop and damage something or itself. Secure the cylinder and drive out the second pin. Leave the caps on the cylinder and remind the shop you want them back. The caps keep the oil in and protect the fittings. While the plugs keep your oil in the machine and dirt out.

The easy part is reinstalling it. Pin one end and reconnect the hoses. Use the hydraulics to extend the cylinder rod to the pivot. Use a wood block to support the cylinder at the proper height.. The hydraulics allow for inching the rod into position without strain.

I agree it was very straight forward and easily accomplished by myself on my B3030. Weight of the cylinder was easily lifted by one person.

Just did this on my Versatile. very simple set bucket down and take lines loose and let the oil drain. Then tap the pins out. I tapped the lower pin out first and then tapped the upper part way out til i grabbed the cylinder with one hand and the pin with the other and worked it out so that I could do it by myself. very easy!

I went to Hook Industrial Sales for the seals - they stock all sorts of cylinder seals and had them in stock. Actually I dropped the cylinders off and $60 later I picked them up all complete. Hook sells over the internet and has stores in here in Ft Wayne and Cincinnati and a few other places.

It can be done somewhat cleanly. If you remove the hoses from the lines like PaPow said. If you need to move the piston then do so with one hose off, that way you can somewhat aim where the fluid will go. Go slowly or your drain pan will need to be 20 feet away.
