Removing Hogs From Farm

Never raised pigs but can you pen them up and raise them as your own? I don't see any tusks that would frighten me. Seems like an opportunity for an instant free pig farm.

Or one could just continue to catch them as the freezer dictates. Then you never actually have to take care/feed them.:licking:
I'm glad we don't have feral hogs around here, they can tear up a field overnight.

What keeps them from digging out or breakin the panels off the posts?

And as C-4 Ranch asked: What is the trigger for the trap door?

See above for the trigger. The soil is sandy loam there and I was afraid they would dig out. Only ones we lost after trapped were a couple small ones that jumped thru the 6x6 wires holes. Some big sows did put a dent in the wire, but it is sturdy

Man I wouldn't have the heart to relocate all those hogs anywhere but into my freezer.

I have not processed any yet, but the neighbors have taken several of them for sausage in the freezer

I'm curious why you built it around a tree? Do you remove them live?

The tree helps with the trigger and pulley. I learned all this from my buddy. He said it is illegal in our area to remove them live, but some do it and sell them for $30 - $50 each.

Doesn't take long for a domestic pig to go feral. In Wisconsin we have permission to shoot on sight.

This put a dent in the herd

Are you able to sell them in your area? We sell the live ones we trap for about $0.40/Lb The guy comes out with his trailer, backs it up to the trap and runs them into the trailer. They have to be at least 100 lbs for him to take them. Apparently they sell the meat in restaurants up north as "wild boar".

Illegal to take them out live, at least that is what we hear

Don't stop... Doubt you've got the entire sounder. Amazingly, they're very smart and will learn and adapt... I'm over run by em and pretty much go in for just the backs traps at this point on choice sows. About 10min and don't even get messy.

I'm going out to work on my 3rd trap later today. I've gown to hate em almost more than coyotes..

I plan to build my own trap and keep it baited

They really haven't taken hold here other than isolated pockets and for once our DNR is trying to stay ahead of it. Problem most people have is the tendency for them to go nocturnal.

If you take them live and let them settle down before the kill, the meat is better than anything you buy at the store. If you kill them, when they are excited, their muscle is full of adrenalin which ruins the meat.

At one time I think the pork producers ran them through a CO2 tunnel for the kill...I guess because they never knew what hit them plus it would help draw blood to the surface. And I agree...wild pork is some pretty tasty stuff.

This is what the "old timers" taught me as well. We would only kill one (farm raised) out of sight of the others, waiting their turn.
