Removing Plug to Install a Block Heater - Need some ideas

The coolant drain is where the hose is running into?
Is the hose suppose to be there? Seems like every one I have seen so far has the plug in it that is removed to add the heater.

The plug should be back above the starter at the back of the block

Thanks for the image Winston. In my picture, the plug is where that hose is coming out of and running down to the drain. I don’t know why there is a hose there and if there should be one? And am I ok to remove that hose?
Winston, that second image in the pictures...is that a better spot for a heater?

looks like it goes into something behind the metal cover? is that the only plug on the engine?

how about a magnetic oil pan heater.

Not sure what’s behind the metal cover there. Just assumed that’s the coolant drain from what I’ve read and people have said. There was a magnetic oil pan heater on there when I bought it but it didn’t work. When I started looking online, adding the block heater in that plug seemed to be most common. I can go back to that magnetic heater, just seems from reviews people have more problems with those.

Just trying to understand why my tractor has a hose coming from that plug to the drain when I can’t seem to find any other tractor with the same setup?

The second picture is a transmission heater. Yes, you can remove the hose and install a heater.

On my YM336D the plug for the heater is behind the starter.

I think you are assuming that it has to make sense.... and that may not be the case. In the first place, it sure looks like a home mechanic add-on feature rather than Yanmar's. And one has to ask why an outside hose is even needed? Maybe it's not needed for any purpose other than sealing a hole. After all, it basically connects two areas in the water jacket that are already connected inside the casting.

Only thing I can think of is that those two coolant access points are what I would choose if I was going to run a heater in a cab. Come to think of it, if I had a cab and a heater on that tractor and then took them off, I'd probably do the easy thing and plumb those two points together with a bypass hose just like yours has.

Which reminds me that one of the really dumb moves I made was selling our wonderful old YM336D...

Awesome! Thanks for the responses everyone. I figured it wasn’t stock from yanmar but just wanted to make sure I was ok. I’ll pull the hose off and add the heater there. And just plug the drain off with something....maybe just cut that hose down and plug it!

Thanks for the info. There has been a few odd things I’ve found and fixed so far and fixed quite a few neglected areas also. Love this tractor!

Next thing to figure out and get working is the thermostart!

336 manual.

And depending on the Yanmar Engine, it should be very close to plug and play with the ZeroStart devices.

Here is an example with the YM165 as the heater just threads into the block. This is shown in the Optional Equipment section of the Parts Manual.

I've tried and tried to search for these p/n's with no luck. Each p/n is a different wattage for the heater.

There is what appears to be a freeze plug next to it, just wondering if I should use that with a different style heater? I壇 rather thread it in there than just sitting there in the freeze plug. Any issues with the freeze plug type?
