I have always just used my pocket knife to knock the paint off.
Same here, just a couple of seconds with the edge of the knife and you are good to go. I had 3 on the loader that the mechanic hit with the grease gun, as there was a wad of grease on them when the tractor was delivered, and I never noticed that grease had not penetrated the painted over zerks. I got to noticing a squeak in the first hour of loader operation, "what the heck".. I investigated and found 3 of the pins had no grease around them. Just scrape the end of the zerks and take the point of the knife and push on the ball to make sure the ball is free, pump some grease in and go on.
