removing the PTO cover

Hi,
After mowing season was done I removed the PTO from the mower w/ an eye to clean and lube it. I got to that a few wks ago and am completely mystified on how to remove the PTO cover. I'd really like to clean the greasy gunk from the shaft but until I can get the cover off thats not possible. Now I know it had to be off in order to size the cover and shaft to my tractor. There must be a way to disengage the tab that connects the cover and shaft. (The tab runs in a groove in the shaft.) I fiddled w/ it a good long time though and couldnt figure it out. The shaft did come w/ a booklet and it shows how to remove the cover on all models exc. the one I have. Its Italian made and came w/ a LP finish mower. Any ideas?

MIne had three wire tabs that you had to push in all at once. I basically pushed one in at a time while pulling on the cover. That would hold the tab in while I did the other two. It came off with no problems at that point. Another one I had on the brush hog was three pins that you actually turned and pulled out. Hope this helps you.

Wish we had a good picture of it, Jim. I've seen at least 3 different designs, but like you said, it's made to come off; just don't know how without seeing it (might not know how even then /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif).

OK, I think there were three plastics tabs. I never thought of pushing them in though. Let me give that a go....stand by and thanx jimg

I've seen one on which you just push the plastic tabs in, and I've also seen one on which you slide them all three to one side (in a slot), then lift them out.

Right, I *think* the tabs cant move side to side so Ill try pushing them in.

One of my PTO's is Italian made. If the 3 tabs are slotted, take a screw driver and turn left a quarter turn, then pry the part that turned up and out. The remainder of the tab stays put.

First, thanx very much for all the help. In the end, just as a last ditch stab, I did a web search for eurocardan (PTO maker) and guess what? Their website has instructions for removing the cover. Wished I had thought to look on the web first. jimg

Thanx...I was going to post this when I finished the job. However, since you have I wont need to. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I was surprised it was online...and better than the booklet which came w/ the PTO. It was one of those pics w/o words universal language things. Not all of the pics made sense and my PTO wasnt listed.

Anyway, Im half way thru the job and some of its not quite as easy as the instructions make it appear. Getting the ends pulled down the shaft is quiet difficult and Ive only managed one so far. Once its been pulled down the rest is very easy. It looks like assembly will go the same way as the joint cover somewhat flxible and doesnt want to line up neatly.

The other 'problem' is that the dealer left all sorts of metal shavings behind when he trimmed the shafts to length. Its an abrasive mess of metal bits, dust and grease which left a couple deep scuffs in the shaft.

Be sure you replace all that 'gunky grease' on the shaft before putting it together. You want lots & lots of grease on these things. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The Land Pride shaft is made by Euro Cardan a major Italian PTO company....see your LandPride dealer they should be able to get you a instruction / safety booklet on your PTO.

VERY IMPORTANT to keep your shields in place....should you not be able to get a booklet...let me know..I will send one to you....

On the topic of PTO shafts...

The S hook on the chain pulled the plastic tab off and now the plastic PTO spins when engaged. The plastic hole for the hook is completely gone, any suggestions? I was thinking of a plastic wire tie around the shaft and then connecting the S hook and chain to it. Any other ideas? I have the same PTO mfg, Eurocardan.

I was thinking about that just the other day and decided I could attach the chain to the yoke cover by popping a hole in it big enough to attach the chain hook. You could also make up a small metal bracket and rivet it in place too. I believe all thats required is a convenient or substantial attach pt. which keeps the chain pout of the moving parts. If the attach pts continue to fail b/c the chain is being pulled thru them then theres another problem.

Thanx for the offer. I did find the instructions online and have half the job done. The other half isnt coming apart so nicely and Im planning to have my dealer show me how it comes off. jimg

I dropped by the dealer this noon w/ the stubborn part. Turns out they had *lots* of trouble getting it off too. In the end a liberal application screw drivers and lubricating language got the thing apart. After it was apart the problem was obvious...the plastic had an exaggerated flare at the tab detent. This kept the tab from slipping over it w/o severe prying. The extra plastic got ground off so it would go on/off the same way the other half does. Look at the diagram at (which isnt entirely accurate):

The offending piece is #8. BTW parts 4, 3, 2/8 come off as a single unit. Tonight I plan to clean and lube the parts and store it all away until next spring. Thanx very much to all who responded! jimg
