Rent a tiller or buy used?

I was looking at this one

That tiller looks like a Troy Bilt.
Probably from the 70's.
I have one from the 80's. The original engine was a Tecumseh.
That 11.5 Briggs is obviously a replacement engine.
They are typically excellent tillers, but run it, and till just a bit to try it before you buy.
All small engines are a pain as far as I am concerned, but if the engine starts and runs well, and it tills, that is probably a fair price at $299.

I will just do this...rent the big one from home depot. Establish my new garden. Save up for a bigger tiller for the future...more than likely a newer up to date one with parts that are available.

For right now I would rent to get it done. Many times what wears out on old tillers is the worm gears. When they do, can you get parts?

I think you've made the right decision in renting. I have a very nice 5' Land Pride tiller that sits for about 360 days out of the year. Sure - it's convenient to have it there ready to go at the drop of a hat. But, having cost something like $2500 new, that's pretty expensive toy to own for no more use than it gets.

I'm sure there are many on here that use theirs a LOT more than I do, which might make the purchase worthwhile. But for my use, a simple walk-behind bought 10 years ago would have been a better choice.

I use my rototiller at my farm to make food plots for the hunters.

I need to work on it. Spend like a little over $1000 on it.

My family has owned a 40x40 garden for over 30yrs. The only reason to absolutely need a tiller is for the initial garden bed making and tilling in manure/compost. They havnt used a tiller in prob 20yrs. You can really till up seeds that are low in the ground when you till.

I rented a big 10hp hydro drive tiller to make a garden in my shale clay soil. Mostly i was useing it to break up the ground and till in 6-8in of manure. I havnt needed a tiller again.
