If you haven't ever operated a dozer this is not the time to learn. They arena different breed altogether. Knowledge of a tractor/backhoe/skidsteer just doesn't compute over to dozer work.

Go with a pro. A good guy can really make it look good and make the rest of reclamation much easier.

Agree on hiring it done. In short it will be cheaper, whatever he charges.

I agree with the other about hiring it done is the cheapest and best route. I can tell you first hand that learning to operate a dozer takes lots of seat time. Anyone can quickly learn how to drive a dozer around in 10 minutes but controlling the blade and know how best to approach the project is a continuing experience.

A real operating engineer would be a great choice. Pick someone who has done it for twenty years and explain your plans. Do what you do for a living and pay to have it done. To many people have learned this the hard way.

Usually the rentals have to charge enough extra to pay for machine abuse by inexperienced operators that will cover the cost of hiring a contractor.

Wow. Great advice from everybody! I think the message is loud and clear that contracting it out to a pro is the way to go. Thanks for all the input and advice. I often have dreams of grandeur on what I think I can accomplish and frequently drastically underestimate the amount of time I will need to do it. (Just ask my wife ;-) I've always been a DIYer for most projects but when it comes big ones, I'm learning that you can pay somebody to get it done quick or drag it out yourself over a much longer period. I'm really more interested in using my future workshop, not the building process.

Again, thanks for all the input and advice! Much appreciated!

I'm amazed noone advocated that you build your own dozer!

Keep us informed on what you get done please, it's always helpful to get TBN price checks form other places. There was a dozer operator in my neck of the woods that charged about $50/hr, but he also spent about 30 minutes an hour on his cell phone.
