Renting trackhoes and bulldozers

United will as well, you just have to call them for the rates. Sunbelt is usually more expensive but if you're trying to budget a project, having a number is helpful, even if it's high. I've rented a mini-ex from United, along with trenchers, mini skid steers and towable man lifts.

I've had trouble renting... so I bought.

Many of the rental outfits in the Bay Area require a commercial account of Contractor License for large equipment.

Most recently I was considering buying a new Bandit Chipper and went to the Dealer to investigate.

He suggested I rent it and if I decided to purchase the full rental would be deducted from the price... sounded good.

A couple of weeks later I call out and reserve the chipper... I show up and the guys are hitching it to my truck... I give my credit card and they run it... just as I was about to leave the manager said they forgot to copy my Contractor License... I don't have a Contractor License and never did...

They wouldn't rent to me... had to unhitch and cancel the credit card... I drove 35 miles one way and nothing was said about the Contractor License requirement.

A friend had something similar... his son in law who is a logger came down from Oregon and was gong to do some grading... the big rental outfit wouldn't rent...

They had a friend with a Contractor's license they called and put it on his account and no problem.

Lots of businesses scared stiff due to Liability Issues in California is what I have been told.

I'm glad I don't live in a state that has those problems. No such thing as a contractor's license here.

No department of licensing for contractors?

It is easy to forget not every state is as regulated as the East and West Coast states seem to be...

Not to derail...

I have been renting 1 yard concrete mix trailers for 35 years... same trailer with the same 5 sack mix.

In the 1980's I would tow the trailer with my Plymouth Valiant the 6 to 10 city blocks to the jobs...

Later I would use my Silverado 1500 pickup with 5.7 V8 which is all set for towing.

Now, neither the Valiant or Silverado are allowed...

Have to have a full size 3/4 or better... no F150 or imports

My 1985 3/4 with 305 V8 that is loaded with a utility boxes is acceptable... only it can't get out of it's way towing a trailer... such is the state of thing.

You only need a license for the trades here; plumber, electrician, A/C and irrigation (maybe a few others I'm not thinking of). If you want to be a home builder or other type of construction contractor, you just hang your shingle and go to work. You'll have to hire licensed trades but the rest of it anyone can do.

I've run into that same problem with tow vehicles. One of the rental places here won't let you tow anything with a bumper hitch. I had an 1997 E250 cargo van with a bumper hitch that clearly said 5,000 pounds on the bumper, it was the old school type that was actually meant to tow, they said no way it has to be a frame mounted receiver. This bumper was frame mounted and very securely so.

^^^This will probably be the next issue... the 3/4 ton 1985 truck has a 12,000 bumper platform and is clearly tagged so...

I'd like to cut the grade down on my 1/4 mile driveway with a dozer, but having never driven one, I'm not sure how good the work would turn out. It would involve moving a lot of earth and some rock, so I'm guessing rippers on the back would be needed, and then the blade to get the right drainage slope. How easy is it to catch on to using a big machine like that? Or am I just better off getting a contractor in to do the work for me?:confused2:

It's not very hard to run a dozer, but like everything, the learning curve is different for everyone. Making dirt flat, smooth or shaped like you want it is where experience comes into play. What it looks like from the seat is completely different then what it looks like when you are standing on the dirt. My Dad will never be able to do anything other then push dirt around, or push a large stump to the burn pile with my dozer. He just isn't able to pay attention to both ends of the blade at the same time and anticipate where it should be. He reacts instead of planning ahead. In the end, he makes the dirt worse then before he started. He has hundreds of hours helping me dig my pond, but everything he did, I had to redo. For rough work, he is fine, but mostly he just burns fuel.

As a former dozer operator, renting a dozer and learning how to run it isn't really cost effective. You'll not be happy with the results. Pushing dirt around is easy, keeping grade and finish dozing takes experience.
