The underside of the piston in concave (carved out) so that the rod will self center when you reinstall the piston. Helps if you move the hitch arms so that the rod is retracted as far as possible when inserting the piston.
Bit the bullet (hardest thing about many...most...repairs is the "getting going" part!) and took the top plate off after removing the seat. (I'd already preordered and received the o-ring, both the rubber one and the plastic back up ring). From start to finish don't think it took me more than about 35 minutes. Hardest part was getting the piston out of the bore, but was able to carefully lever it out by using an edge on open end 1/2" wrench to get some height, and pried (gently) on the inside edge of the piston (there is a small ledge) with a small flat blade screwdriver. Old o-ring was so worn, it came easily out of the bore far enough for me to get my work glove on it and pull it out. No problem with the bore, or replacing the o-rings. Slid it back in the bore, lightly tapped it with the wooden end of a ball peen hammer to seat the piston rod, reassembled, and by golly, it works!
The next thing I did was order a ROPS for the b7100 from Kubota and have the local Kubota dealer install it. They have a special program for older tractors, which gets a ROPS specifically made for your older Kubota to you at a very affordable price. Cost me $291.00 (and change, including 8.4% tax) for the ROPS and installation. Well worth it!
Now all I need to know is where the rear resovoir drain plugs for the b7100d are located...I don't see any plugs in the axle...do you just remove the lower axle bolt and drain both sides, one at a time? (I have the shop manual on cd, but it's not very clear....)
Thanks for earlier help!
