We have one tire shop in our town and the owner has been begging for help all year. He cant find anyone who wants to work on something as difficult as changing tires. However I am on our hospital board and we run more than 20% open positions. We survive on overtime and importing temps who work 80 hour weeks. These are positions from maintenance to doctors.
On our farms, we do a lot of the repair work ourselves but we had an important tractor, 3rd season, less than 1,000 hours, down for 3 weeks because of a special hose. I wouldn’t blame it on COVID - I bought a L6060 to replace my L5740 4 years ago because the L5740 needed to be split for a repair and the dealer couldn’t get to it for 3 weeks. I needed my tractor right away due to crops ready in the field so I told the dealer to fix it and keep it - make me a deal on a new tractor I can’t walk away from and he did.
One local farmer gets help for his operation from a local technical school. A problem he encountered was druggies. Now the school has random drug testing and the quality of workers has improved.
