Boy.. these improvised repairs bring back memories.

My step brother was one of those guys that liked to go 'mud' his truck. on more than one occasion he's blow the bolts out of a drive shaft flange or soemthing similar. i can remember having to remove 2 of the botls from the front shaft to put inthe back shaft flange.. so we could still use 4x4 low and crawl out o fthe mud, and then put the other 2 bolts in the rear and use a coat hanger to hold up the front short shaft and get home .. etc.

Have done the thing where you rob a lugnut off the other 3 wheels to replace 3 of the 4 you just lost when you set the 4 in the hubcap on the side of the road and some guy nearly sideswipes you and the hubcap and nuts go flying everywhere...

Bird, I suppose you left the radiator cap loose so as to not build up pressure so the bubble gum wouldn't blow a bubble full of water and or fall off.

Was it Double Bubble or Fleer's bubble gum?

We put the cap back on and sealed it to get pressure to force the repair stuff (cereal) into the hole and hold it there. It held for an hour that night and a couple hours the next day till we pulled into a small Mexican town with a radiator shop. IT cleaned out just fine and the repair held for the intervening years till I I sold the truck and into the future.

Egon, I mentioned that in a previous post where I first mentioned cereal, I think. It helps reduce the area of the hole and lets the cereal or whatever bridge the gap better, especially under pressure. Just pinching the hole will not usually stop the leak, just slow it, especially under pressure. Of course, a DIY repair soldering the hole closed is way easier if you pinch the bad spot together first. I know guys who had pinched and soldered so many tubes in their old radiators that it reduced cooling to the point of easy overheating.

Pat, as a matter of fact, it was Double Bubble (don't recall ever hearing of Fleer's or am I falling for another prank?:D ). And yes, we did leave the radiator cap loose.

Egon, about 5:20 a.m., 5/28/95 (Sunday morning; day before Memorial Day), I hit a mule deer on I-84 about exit 87, Ogden, UT, driving my brother's boss's 94 Dodge RAM 1500 4 x 4 enroute to Ellensburg, WA. Did you know the front end of those Dodges looks to be bullet proof, but ain't? We pulled the radiator forward and tied it there, and my brother had some needle nosed pliers in his tool box to crimp one tube in the radiator core and we continued our trip. The air-conditioner even still worked, although the condenser coils were badly bent. Headlights worked, but the aim was a bit unique. When we got back to Texas, they had to replace everything in front of the fan, but it was all nuts and bolts; no straightening of anything and no painting to be done.

Bird, No kidding this time. Double Bubble was cylindrical shaped with a couple little marks like it had been gently bit down on and came in predominantly blue and yellow wrapper, I believe (hasn't changed too much till present day.) Fleers bubble gum was little pillow shaped rectangular solids with a small color cartoon wrapped around the gum under the outer wrapping.

I have only hit one deer and that was with an '84 Ford. I had a pretty good set of bolt on guards so I only lost some plastic and one turn signal was dangling on its wires. This was in north Texas.

Pat, it's been many many years since I chewed any bubble gum, or even looked at any, but of course I certainly remember the Double Bubble; just can't remember even hearing of Fleer's.

Fleer Funnies

This is about Fleers and the comicks.

Bazooka brand and Bazooka Joe was yet another popular gum and their cartoon mascott.

One of the closer BBQ houses, BOB'S BBQ in Ada, gives away bubble gum at the register when you are bailing yourself out. It sure helps get the shredded beef out from between your teeth.

Ah, yes, Pat, Bazooka is the other brand I couldn't think of earlier. Didn't all movie theater seats and most school desks have gum stuck to the bottom of them in the 50s? Of course, I chewed a bit of bubble gum in my earlier days, but I'm not sure I've chewed any since the 50s. Instead of bubble gum, in the late 50s I chewed a lot of Dentyne when there was only one flavor. And I've rarely chewed gum since. My wife quit smoking in June and she's sure chewed a lot of gum since then, but not bubble gum.:D
