A month or so ago, my John Deere mower stopped mowing. It still runs like a Deere, it just doesn't mow like one. After a little investigation, I noticed that the deck was disconnected from the PTO, it appears that some component of the locking collar for the PTO drive shaft has failed. I took it to a local Deere dealer. Initially they quoted $420 to replace the entire shaft, then they said I could just get half the shaft with the locking collar for about half of that. This still seems a bit ridiculous. I cannot quite figure out what fell out our broke so that the spring that provides tension is no longer held in place by the ring at the base of the collar. Does anyone have any suggestions for repairing this?

Looking at Buy OEM Parts it appears that I may be able to get by with the AM133972, but I'd still rather fix than replace, if possible.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

You could buy just the AM133973 Lock Kit $68.63 as the spring probably just sprung and popped out. You can take the snap ring off, disassemble and see if all the parts are there. You may be able to coil the spring back down and repair. You can also go aftermarket for the yoke with the lock, but $68. Is not all that bad.

I did as Tractor Tech suggested and ordered the repair kit on eBay. The lock ring was so difficult to take off that I ended up taking it to my John Deere dealer. He was eventually able to remove it and installed the new kit on for free. ( I just purchase a new MC542 and am taking my tractor in for service next week, so they were pretty well incentivized to give me a hand. Thanks for the suggestion!

@scdemer

Do you know exactly how he removed the lock ring? I'm wondering if there are special tools required?

Thanks!

Use a screwdriver to pry the external retaining ring out. If collar is disengaged, put on shaft to unlock the collar.
