Both ends are welded on. Do you mean I'll have to take off the cap where the shaft comes out, and there's a nut under that? Hmm, I'm so ignorant maybe I should hire it done.

There should be a cap on the rod end of the cyl. Usually they unscrew, altho you might need a spanner wrench to unscrew it. The nut I was referring to is on the base end of the rod, inside the cyl, and is used to hold the piston to the rod. That nut will have to be unscrewed and piston removed before you can replace the shaft seal.

Going from 5" to 4" will reduce force / increase speed by 36%.
An impact wrench works wonders for a nut removal situation like muddstopper describes.

The nut on a five in cyl is probably going to be around the 2in size, Not a job for any HF impacts. I didnt have it at the time, but I now own a 1in drive impact that might have worked.

Yup, even the smaller cylinders on my 580B call for 450 ft lb tightening torque, got several more to do so I'm also thinking about a 1" drive... Steve

Keep in mind that those big impacts use BIG AIR! A typical home shop setup is no more than "breaking wind" for those wrenches. I had to run mine off the Sulair (160cfm) compressor and 3/4" hose. And the better HF 1" impact does just fine as well as their 3/4 and 1" impact sockets. But I'd have to say farm the job out. No sense spending $300+ on tools to install a $30 seal kit if you don't already have the tools.

And they know how to do it right. Should have the proper tools and knowledge and be quicker with no worry when you have the cylinder loaded. Just have the fun or removing and reinstalling the cylinder.
