I need to replace the gas/spring hood strut on my New Holland TD75D. Is this something I should get from NH dealer, or is there a source for generic aftermarket replacement? I think at the dealer it will be $30-$40. At present it provides no lift support at all. Can these things fail suddenly when the hood is raised? It would seem that it could cause serious personal injury if it were to drop the full weight of the hood onto a person.

I have wondered why a lawyer hasn't started a class action lawsuit over gas struts. Seems like a great way to make a ton of money.

They can work fine, (for a while), if they are made well. Far too many, are of very poor quality.

One auto manufacturer, who uses them a lot, has the worst ones of all. It's almost a given when I work on one of their vehicles, the hood isn't going to stay up.

You can take it off, and try to match it up at an auto parts store. But, there are a whole lot of different ones out there.

$30 isn't necessarily a bad price.

BROOMSTICKS work great just cut to size :)

That's in the ballpark of what I've paid for the generic ones that are less than universal.

No thanks to broomsticks, or 2x4's. I know it's the preferred redneck solution. However, they are not reliable. Most service professionals have adjustable hood props, complete with non-slip rubber tips.

Having the broomstick slip, and the hood fall on you, gets old, fast.
