replacement starter

the little hampster inside my starter on my 2001 TC33D is retireing. Ive tried new batteries, charging batteries, jumping directly to the starter..... no change... just slow laborious grown as the starter turns over the tractor but at a speed to slow to fire it offf.

Time for a new one or a rebuild. When i inquired at the local dealer they laughed at the suggestion that it might be less than $100. He said he thought the last one he sold was $300!:shocked:

He strongly recommended i take it to the local rebuild shop. As time is much shorter than funds, being able to take it off run it over there during business hrs and then a few days later pick it up during business hours is going to be challenging.

anyone have a source for a non $300 version... perhaps online? Ill be happy to buy 3 $100 Chinese versions even if they only last me 3-4 years.

I see new aftermkt starters on eBay for $81, shipped, SCHMISM.

If the starter is bad, most likely the brushes are worn down, an easy fix.
I have done it numerous times.

so take a stab at "rebuilding" it myself? think i could take brushes in hand around to the rebuild shops and see if they had replacements?

Soundguy? you got a cross number for a napa part? is it something i could get from one of the local parts house if i just had a part off of something else. (not like they are going to have a New Holland TC33 in the computer)

It appears your solenoid is working which is good. The winding is either good or bad, there is no in between most of the time wirng . There might be slight chance of partial short on the rotor wiring causing less magnetic filed and thus less torque. If the brush is worn out and does not make good contact can cause less voltage. my suggestion is to attempt an overhaul and at most if not successful then you can consider buying from Fleabay. The brush is going to be carbon rod and I am sure yo can find something close to fit.

I would recommend checking with the local shops. I have had various starters rebuilt by a good shop locally.

Ask them what the lead time is. They might be able to rebuild yours in the time it takes to order and ship one. It doesn't hurt to ask.

I just worked the starter on my Honda quad that would occasionally start and other times needed an easy pull on the manual start cord to rotate things a little before the electric start worked. Pulled it all apart and one of the brushes was not making full contact, lots of carbon debris in there. Some compressed air and WD-40 and more compressed air free'd up the brush and I also cleaned the rotor with a brass brush. Now it starts like new.

Yeah, my TRX300 did that, and I ground part of the brush holders down so the brushes will
have another 1/2 mm or so of usable length. When that fails, I will buy a whole brush
kit (brushes, holder, backing plate) on eBay for $24. Or $20 for just brushes and solder them in
yourself.

I wish they had the same for tractor starters...

:mur: who the .... what the..... im going to reach through the internets and smack me a CNH engineer who thought it would be a good idea to through bolt the starter!

so instead of this being a 20 min swap, the top bolt drops out, and falls back behind the firewall dash pannel!

so now what? a 2 hr bolt fishing expidition and trying to figure out how the F im supposed to get that stupid thing back in there!

REALLY!.... REALLY!
